Very nice write up. Thanks for sharing.
I agree with most of this.
Yeah I thought Dotson was a little better than this personally. Pretty depressing to think we have two strong safeties. I like Barron but the Goldson signing was just a poor decision....The glennon write up is fair and I'm very excited about our RB situation :D
Agreed....I believe this is a very even-handed evaluation of things although I also had the impression that Dotson was further along in his development...

I wouldn't be too depressed about it. The way I look at it, there really is no FS and SS anymore. There is just one safety position and that guys has to be able to do both. I think Goldson and Barron can do both quite well and will be very good together in a smarter scheme that puts them in a position to succeed. Goldson just has to lower his hits. He is a target now and he has to be extra safe or he'll be suspended and of no use to anyone.
Fair, balanced and honest. A good read - thanks Joe.Should Foster move to SLB?

I actually disagree. A few years ago - completely correct. Under Raheem Morriss (and during that era of pass defence) most teams had interchangeable safeties (as long as they had enough talent at the position). The NFL is currently in a phase with lots of single high safety play. A great example (but one among many) are the Seattle Seahawks. Teams are attempting to move more players down low to interfere with the low/intermediate routes (and run game) and have an old-school Ed Reed back at safety. Now, on some level the players are interchangeable. These aren't the days where you can have Roy Williams at the safety positon. Both safeties are going to have to be able on some level to play at the free safety position or else today's QBs are going to read your defence in a split second and rip you apart. The problem that Joe Bussell hits on, and I agree with, is that neither safety has enough range to play single-high. That's not the type of player Barorn is (which is fine) but I honestly thought that's what we were getting with Goldson, but we haven't. I
With the breakdown of Glennon, don't go jumping on the "WE NEED TO DRAFT A QB!" bandwagon. He has a chance to improve beyond being a below average starter and not only that, we need pieces around the Quarterback before bringing a new one in. Let's get that slot receiver and sure up that O-Line, so when/if a new Quarterback comes in. He's not thrown into the mess.
I take everything Joe writes with a grain of salt...he was not a personnel guy...he was an operations guy. That being said, I do enjoy his tweets and reading some of his stuff.

Probably why he was fired . Too much time trying to pretend he was a scout instead of doing his job of setting up the tents at training camp.

Tog or BR or anyone, what are the odds the new guys move on from Goldson? what are the cap implications?
They aren't moving on. According to Over the Cap his cap number is $9,000,000 and the dead money would be $9,000,000.

Zero...VBF, there are no cap ramifications positive or negative for outright cutting Goldson this offseason.
stulaakke is right. I read that wrong. When I put it through the calculator it came out zero.
