so zero chance even with no cap hit? They must see value in the guy

There's no cap acceleration because Goldson didn't get a signing bonus, but if they cut him, they're still paying him because he has guaranteed salary.

It just depends on how they want to use him. They used him as a free safety in SF, but if you think he's covering ground like Ed Reed in his prime, that's not happening. But they aren't cutting him with Tandy, and who knows else on the roster as the depth.

His contract includes $18M guaranteed. He got $9M of it in 2013 and he'll get $9M of it this year. Whether he is on our roster or not.....he gets $9M. I don't think there is any chance of us moving on from Goldson before 2015.

Goldson is going to benefit from this coaching change more than anyone. In SF he was always in good positions to make things happen and was used as he should be. Schiano was the problem with Goldson last year. He was not used properly at all.

I agree. However, he isn't worth $8.2M per year. That makes him the 3rd highest paid safety in the league. So I don't expect him to be around long term.

I agree with that too. Goldson is really more of a SS. Makes no sense that they drafted Barron and then signed Goldson when they are very similar players but neither has the range to play a true single high scheme. Goldson should also never be asked to play man to man. I would much rather have the opposition make a short completion and have Goldson right there to blow it up and make that WR think about it next time he goes over the middle. When they put him in man bump and run coverage they take away his Kryptonite.

On the subject of roster evaluations, I found this from PFF. I increased the image size to make it legible so hopefully the board's formatting doesn't reduce it back down:8Difxwl.png

There's a small chance you trade him if you can get the right deal and if he'd be willing to renegotiate (or some other team would be willing to take on his cap number, unlikely). You'd then have to sign a FS in FA (Jairus Byrd...)Honestly, it really depends on what Lovie Smith actually plans to run in terms of coverage. Will he stick to his Cover 2 (with it interchangeable safeties and a boon to Goldson as he plays more physical without needing to be rangey) or does he continue what he was doing with Chicago (and a leage trend) and play a lot more man?Realistically, apart from what some are saying, it's a WASTE in cap dollars and draft picks to have Revis playing a lot of Cover 2. I'm sure he's good at it, but he's only worth the money you pay him if you lock him up on the no. 1. My guess is that you'll see a lot more man from Revis and an improved (but overpaid) year from Goldson. Then takes a paycut or gets cut in 2015.

I think it's possible our future FS is already on the roster. Rashaan Melvin has the size and ability to become a very good safety with proper coaching....which he has now.

That image is off base. Martin is better than that...I'd bump him up 2 notches. I'd argue Jackson is elite. Wright is not below average...I'd bump him up 1 notch. Nicks when healthy is elite. I'd probably bump Williams up 1 notch too. On D, I'd bump Spence up at least 1 spot. I'd also bump up Clayborn one spot. I'd bump up Foster one spot. I'd also bump up Banks, Barron, and Goldson each a spot...with Barron going up maybe 2.

I'm assuming those rankings are based on the PFF scoring system which I feel doesn't show the whole picture.
