I always looked forward to the Pewter Report Battle Plans, where you analyzed how you would approach free agency and the draft if you were the Bucs GM. Did I miss these this year, or did the Pewter Report team not do them?
Should be out tomorrow or Thursday.
I'm putting this in here because i didn't want to start a new thread when it somewhat pertains to this topic. Let me preface this with I like Godwin and what he brings as a very solid #2 WR and appreciate him and that he has been very reliable for us since year 2, but was just looking over cap #'s and all I can say is woof. I'd be curious on SR or any of the other very knowledgeable writers/posters take ( perhaps in a battle plan ) on how they would handle his situation. Godwin's salary for this year is currently 27.5 mil, the last two years of his contract automatically void at the end of 2024 so he'll be a FA next off season. He carries a dead cap charge of 18 mil regardless next year. if that was it that'd be one thing but from 2025-27 he carries a dead cap charge of a total of 31 million. I think if they resign him next year some of that can get pushed down the road, but what if he has an average season where he only has 800 ish yards and 4-5 Tds ?

You sure about that?
From everything I’ve seen he has a dead cap hit of $18.8 next year. And, that’s it.
Bucs can continue to kick the WR can down the road as long as they wish, but it’s approaching the time that they invest a premium draft spot on a WR. I’m not talking about a 6th round flyer. I’m talking 1st or 2nd round pick. This is a passing league and Mike and Chris are getting long in the tooth.

According to Over the cap he carries 18.85m (25) 11.31m(26),and 3.78m(27). only way to get on the plus side of that would be as a post June 1st cut THIS year which saves 20 mil, with a 7.5 mil dead cap charge this year, but if that were to happen I'm not sure what future dead cap charges look like those years in that scenario. I agree with RHS, Tampa definitely needs to invest premium draft capital either this year or next so that Mike can tutor them behind the scenes the way that Vincent Jackson did for him.

Godwin's contract included $40M guaranteed at signing. That included a $18,750,000 signing bonus and his 2022 and 2023 salary.
Now, his 2023 base salary ended up getting converted to a signing bonus to create cap space, and it added a void year.
If you look at at the signing bonus, restructures, and his 2024 salary ($20M), he'll clear his guarantees.
So, if you factor in the remaining prorated bonuses:
Restructure Bonus:
2025 - $3.74M
2026 - $3.74M
2027 - $3.74M
And the initial signing bonus:
2025 - $3.75M
2026 - $3.75M
Those numbers come out to $18,852,000....which would be his dead cap for 2025.
I also checked it with Sportrac and it's showing the exact same thing. Line for line.
WR pick better next year, not this year. Coach up those young guys behind Evans and Godwin this year. Use the picks this year for other pressing needs.

It's a super deep WR draft this year.
Depends on how FA shakes out, and based on the way I think these contracts are going to get structured; I think there will be a couple decent signings in FA.
So, WR could be in play from R1-R3.

Thank you for clearing that up Donkey, that makes me feel a little better. I was going based off what Overthecap figures were showing. 18.8 mil is still a lot to eat for next year but i'll take that over the 32 mil over 3 years that I thought it was. I'd still be curious to hear any ideas ( if any ) on how to make that number more manageable, as I doubt Godwin would outright take a pay cut.

No worries!
I think that's as about as manageable as you could've hoped for.
His cap hit in 2025 will be $23.4M, which they can always convert some to a bonus (pushing the dead cap), but I don't think they will.
IMO, this is the last contract he'll play under before retiring.
As far as Godwin, I don't think he takes a pay cut and I would expect him to be somewhere else next season (while we take on the dead cap hit).
@donkey_hunter I’m less concerned about Evans ( currently ). We took the dead cap off of Evans old contract this year. Im glad that PR posted the breakdown on the new contract this morning, I think the dead cap he’ll eat up once the new void years hit will be more manageable seeing as by the time we get there the cap will likely be close to 300 mil. As for Godwin I don’t like the prospect of carrying almost 19 mil next year while he collects from a new team. I am curious when Gage will be cut as that will free up 10 million in cap space..
Cool! I was thinking they would be published prior to the Evans/Winfield deals.
SR plan is comedy. Dude mocked a trade getting a round 2 pick from Joe Tryon, 2 WR's in the second round, and paying another safety 8 figures.
We could just sign Jordan Whitehead back and make things right in the world
