Yes, sorry for continuing on the Winston threads, but everyone is all over the place.
Here's my 2 cents. I was never a big supporter of the "Draft Jameis Winston" party line. Come draft time, I was "ok" with drafting him, but I certainly wasn't thrilled with it. I knew they were going to draft a QB, neither of whom I liked", but here we are. My reservations about Winston were based on his lack of maturity. Yes, this happened 2 years ago, not 2 months ago, but let's not ignore the talk to the kids in school last year where he basically said that the girls should just be quite and stand in the background. That's Cam Newton talk right there. Last year, we know about the on the field stuff too with the headbutt in the Dallas game and poking Lattimore in the Saints game. The trend continues. He is immature, that's all there is to it, so let's not pretend he's a "great character guy", because great character guys are not immature. So to those still trumpeting for Winston, be quiet. You have no legs to stand on.
That said, a lot of this stuff is minor. Yeah, I know the "rape", but I'm confident he didn't rape the girl at FSU. I'm quite certain it was consensual and she was after money. I mean, you aren't a member of the "Cleat Chasers", because it's a reputable organization. At this point, we only know that he's guilty of not being forthcoming with information. The things he's done are things that immature and foolish children do. That's right, he does need to grow up. These aren't things to just jump ship. I'm fine with letting the season play out and see what happens. The season can take so many turns. Could we be 5-11? Sure. Could we be 8-8? Yes. Could we be 11-5? YES.
In my opinion, I'm not cutting Winston. If 11-5 happens, I'm not giving him an extension, but he gets 2019 to replicate it. If 8-8 happens, I'm looking at the draft and possibly taking a QB early to compete with Winston. If 5-11 happens, I'm drafting a QB in the first round. If the rookie wins the job, then it's his and Winston will be cut or traded.
I'm not giving Winston an extension, period. If he's still our guy after the 2019 season, I'll offer him a 3-year contract that will be below market value pending his performance and actions over the next 2 seasons. If he cleans up his act and plays like a #1 draft pick, I'll give him a 7-year market value deal. Anything short of that, he either takes a team friendly deal or I move on. I'll deal with the "issues", if he plays great, but at discounted price. I will not deal with the "issues" if he plays like he has for most of his career to date.
