We were down by 2 points after just scoring a TD with 2:09 left in the 4th quarter with 2 time outs left.
Why try for an onside kick there? It just doesn't even make sense. Kick it away and:
*Field position is automatically in your favor (unless you give up a big run back)
*You have less yards to go for a field goal if you stop them.
*North of the 2 minute warning, forcing them to go 3 and out (which we did anyway) we would have had about 1:30 left on the clock to drive for "YIKES and YES" a field goal to win.
Now, onside kick in which we did and:
*Not recovering meant that the Pats offense had to go less than 10 yards to kick a field goal.
*It had to be perfect and with a hop in the air. It was a flat dud. Have they even practiced that?
*We got an offsides penalty on the onside kick which inched them closer to the field goal.
*That field goal was made it so we had to score a touchdown instead of "YIKES and YES" a field goal.
This is all Koetter here. These 3 VERY big keys would have increased our chances of winning despite the poor game we had.
