No point in discussing "candidates". As long as Schiano is here, McNulty is gonna be the guy.  Nobody else will come for what would surely be the lamest of lame duck regimes.

Never said "if  Schiano  stays". I didn't put any limiting factors on this discussion. Just looking at guys who might be a good fit as OC for this team.

Gary Kubiak as OC.  (With Lovie Smith at HC and Jim Leavitt at DC)

Does anyone honestly believe it matters? Does anyone really think Sully isn't running Schiano's offense and whoever replaces him will continue to run Schiano's offense?

Thread wasn't intended to turn into a  Schiano bash-fest, which is the direction it's going. I simply want to know, of the pool of candidates at the NFL level, who might be a viable option for OC that might have success with our current roster. For example, suppose we hire a Lovie Smith or a Greg Roman, or a Mike Zimmer. Who might be a good fit for OC?

If we replace Schiano, I think we need an offensive HC with a good DC.

Yeah, I really think he isn't running "Schianos offense"Schiano has an offensive philosophy, not a scheme.

Agreed. Its funny how this team hasnt had a balanced offensive and defensive unit in quite some time. When one unit is good..the other sucks.

It also seems much easier to find a great DC than a great OC. So to get a top young OC, you gotta make him a HC....then team him up with an older, experienced DC. Ideally you want a HC that is balanced and great on with both sides of the ball, but that is easier said than done. It sure seems like offensive guys can evolve into well rounded guys easier than defensive guys though. Lovie, Dungy, Rex....they may have top defenses year after year, but they never seem to grow into a balanced HC. Seems like offensive HCs are better at evolving imo.

I also like the idea of Kubiak as OC.

It isn't that they aren't balanced, it is that they don't have QB's. Seriously look at who Rex has had, or Dungy in Tampa (because he got a lot more "offensive minded" in IND). Billick went from MIN where he was Mr Offense to a defensive grinder in BAL. People forget Bellichek was a defensive genius...right up until he got Brady. Don't worry about what side of the ball the HC was on, get a guy who is good for the job.

I see your point Dal, but I don't think I am alone when I say that I am sick and tired of not having an exciting innovative offense. Year after year, coach after coach, OC after OC, we seem to be boring, predictable, and ineffective on offense. Last year we had a solid year, nothing amazing....and we shattered franchise records. That says a lot. We need a great offensive mind in Tampa. We have the pieces on defense that we should be able to maintain a top 15 defense as long as we have a decent DC, but in this new offense driven NFL we need to make a conscience effort to make strides on the offensive side of the ball.

Christ its so hard to find real threads right now. Red board is littered with spam this morning. With the amount of TOs the D has forced this team should be way better than it is. The offense is way too predictable. Sullivan need to go. Sheridan gets a pass, his D is playing okay and we still have no pass rush from the front 4.

We do and any HC needs to discuss who they want to hire as an OC and the type of offense they want to bring. The words run and take shots better not be part of any conversation. :)

My take is that the HC has to be a good at doing HC things, period, offensive/defensive innovation is secondary. This is the NFL, not a pharmaceutical company. Innovation is fleeting in this game, sound principles are not.More importantly, the coach needs to be able to identify, attract and keep good coaching talent. I think that's the biggest takeaway I have from the Raheem/Schiano era. Staff littered with guys who would be 2nd/3rd choices elsewhere.

That's where picking coaches from non-traditional paths hurts you. Coordinators and former head coaches have networks. Position coaches and college coaches don't.
