Too much time on the clock for that call. Either you trust your team or you don't. One stop, and you're back in the game, regardless of field position. Also, Page had as much of a chance of a big return taking it himself than they would have on a reverse. Statistically, he probably had more of a chance. That was a god awful call, any way you slice it.
Well you don't trust your offense...why should you? Statistically speaking it was more likely the median gain for Paige was higher but the odds for a game changing play would be higher on the trick. Plus, you have 4:27 left. You are telling me that you think there was time for 3 possessions in that mix -your odds of a onside recovery are insanely slim if we are tlaking probability. In addition to time, are you telling me you think we had a 75 yard drive in us to take that defense? Nahh, I'm not Rutgers fan but that was a call that showed some willingness to take a chance to win, unlike the hordes of 1st and 2nd and long dive plays we called.

Too little too late. After the 0-8 start Schiano acted like a riverboat gambler. He pulled out all the stops. As soon as he won a few games he went back to being the shhhttt bag coach he's always been. If he is retained he will be the same crap coach as he's always been. He sucks at his job and he should be fired.

I agree, I feel so unclean defending him, but there are a LOT of other things to fire him for but not that one particular play.

Not disagreeing with that ^ - a lot of other reasons before this play selection and nary a one has changed. This was just the latest. One of the grains of sand found on a beach...
While I don't think it's the heinous playcall some think it is, it's the type of play which sticks out in fans and possibly owners minds. So it could have more of an effect than the series of dumpoffs and draws not gaining any yardage for a month.
Page could have been sat for a couple of reasons which more surround the play than as punishment for the specific play. He may, as suggested by others, been kept on the sidelines because it was felt he'd let the last play carry over or it could be a season cumulative reason....recall Schiano on mic'd up talking to him.....as Page has made some curious decisions back there at times.
If you don't TRUST or have any BELIEF in him, who should be ACCOUNTABLE for him being on the field?

Here's another way to look at it. You put together a quick, TD scoring drive to close out the 3rd quarter. The hurry up offense was working. You score, and then you make them beat you. You don't beat yourself before they have to.

http://www.thebaycave.com/2013/12/16/coaching-decision-led-to-a-big-blunder/ Coaching decision led to a big blunderBucs by Gil ArciaA couple weeks back, Buccaneers’ head coach Greg Schiano said he had left tricks in the bag against Carolina. In the loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, it seemed as if the Bucs would go the entire game without any trickery. That was until the fourth quarter came along. The botched reverse on the kickoff return between Eric Page and Russell Sheppard has made headlines and has been turned into jokes on social media. Being down 23-14 at the time, the Bucs should not have even considered going for something like that with over four minutes left in the game. End result was a fumble recovery and touchdown by San Francisco from inside the 10-yard line.So what exactly was discussed on the sideline before the return? According to Schiano after the game, the reverse was to be run only if it looked good to run it.“It was a called play,” Schiano said. “We were going to run a reverse if the opportunity presented itself the right way. It didn’t, yet we still ran it, but it’s okay. We made a mistake. Guys make mistakes sometimes.”Assuming that “guy” that made a mistake being Eric Page, he was asked about what happened on the reverse. He too says the play was called.“We have been working on that play for a few weeks,” Page said. “Yeah, it was called before we went out. It just wasn’t executed right.“I mean, I will have to take a good look at [the tape]. We executed it in practice. It just didn’t work the way we thought it would work. There was obviously a handoff issue. I think that was the biggest thing. I have to watch it [on tape] again, I think it was just a handoff issue.”So the play did legitimately come from the sidelines (or in other words, the coaches). Schiano said it was to be done if the opportunity to run it was there. That leaves the decision on the player. The question here should be why, with being down just nine points, even discuss a play that may not be successful?Schiano stated guys make mistakes sometimes and he is right. But coaches do as well. And in this case, it was a mistake on the coaches to even allow a high risk play to be called.
What I dislike even more than the call was him throwing Page under the bus like that. Should have just said "we ran It and it didn't work out".
Why would you let a young guy like Page with not much experience to make a snap decision like that, especially when the team is down 9 late in the game? Schiano is always trying to put the blame on other people for the bad things and take credit for good things, I'm sick of it.
I guess the Bucs should just fold up operations if they can't run a play that has a chance of failing... take up t-ball maybe?
honest question FireSchiano, (please don't read any sarcasm in this) do you think he was throwing Page under the bus, or simply being honest that the player had the option to either go with the reverse or pull out of it and run the return normally, and he thought Page made a mistake attempting it? (is that last part what is considered throwing him under the bus?)Maybe I'm not reading the quote right, but I guess I didn't get the "deflect criticism away" mode, but more so answering the question about the play honestly.

That's my take on it - even if Page is responsible for the fumble (which I'm still not entirely convinced of), as the coach he should fall on the damn sword...it was a dumb situation to put the rookie in.

I think he was throwing Page under the bus. A coach should take the blame for it. It was not the time for that call to be made. Page may have made a mistake at attempting it, but why are you putting that much on a young guy with little experience like Page? Even if Page did screw it up, I think Schiano needs to take the blame for putting him in that type of situation, especially given that it was called when it was.
