They have the leverage of a longer term contract in a sport where injuries occur all the time. I think you could very easily get him to take a longer term deal worth roughly $8 mil/year with a nice signing bonus that is front loaded. Atkins got 55/5 but 15 of it was a signing bonus so it breaks down to roughly $8mil/year salary. Manipulate the cap hit with the signing bonus. Why cant McCoy sign something similar?
Because he can make $15.8M under the franchise tag and be a free agent all over again the next year.
Which player wants to play under a franchise tag? And why would believe that McCoy is that kind of guy? He's rich, he's playing the same position in the same city as a guy he idolizes, he's active in the community, and is raising a family here, and we'll be backing up the Brinks truck again. Why would he leave?
Atkins contract pays him 54.75 million over six years, 9.125 million a year. Six sacks this year, over one and a half million a sack.

So we got a bargain.
I'm thinking more that dollars per sack is a poor way to judge a DT. If you're going to look at it that way, the best option is not to have a team at all.
You are actually wrong with your $15.8 number. Franchise tag is 120% minimum increase of the player's previous year salary, not their cap hit. McCoy's 2014 salary is only $10.295. So his tag number would be $12.354. So you would be the agent who would risk a $55-60 mil long term deal for the possibility of getting a $65-70 mil deal if he stays healthy for the next two years? Tell us again why you arent an agent?
What leverage did Geno Atkins have to not ask for more? His deal is manageable and McCoy's will be as well.
His franchise tag number was only $8.4M, McCoy's is $15.8M. And Atkins was only going to make $1.2M in 2013. McCoy's cap number next year $13.2M. If I was McCoy's agent I wouldn't even pick up the phone unless the Bucs were offering Revis money. Sit back and get the franchise tag money or become an unrestricted free agent in his prime coming off pro-bowls. He has the Bucs by the balls.
The bucs should have leverage on Jackson because he will be older and want guaranteed money again. He could want to sign with a title contender if we aren't at the time but he'll be making way less.
Again the Bucs are in a no win situation. The only way he will take a paycut is if his play dramatically drops off, and if that's the case they were wrong for not trading him.
Atkins contract pays him 54.75 million over six years, 9.125 million a year. Six sacks this year, over one and a half million a sack.
His 2013 cap hit is $7.1M... and he's on IR.

So why don't you believe McCoy's cap hit will not be something similar with an extension?Do have something against the guy or are you just some special kind of stupid?
I don't care if he's on the moon, he's still getting paid. You're actually trying to present an argument that he's a better value because he's not available to play.

His signing bonus and option bonus is pro-rated and calculated into it. When guys get $30M signing bonuses they don't calculate the salary as $30M when determining the franchise tag for his position. If it's a 5 year deal its base salary + $6M pro-rated signing bonus. It's cap number. His franchise tag number is indead $15.8M. If McCoy is tagged a 3rd year in a row it's $27M, totaling $61.8M. And you're sitting there talking about less than that over the life of a long term contract. Get real.

You're trying to present an argument that he's getting 0 sacks a guy while playing. Atkins playing 9 games is still a better value than McCoy playing 16. You want to calculate something else? Figure out what Atkins has made per sack for his career compared to McCoy so we could all have a good laugh. Even including the games Atkins was a backup it's still infinitely better than McCoy.

You are wrong on this point. I know what the difference is between a cap hit and base salary. The 120% base increase is from the base salary number, not the cap hit. So it is INDEED not $15.8 mil.
Nope

Great argument, filled with plenty of thought provoking retort. Look it up man. This is all moot...franchise tags are in place to benefit the organization. McCoy's agent would be a fool to hold out for "Revis money" as you put it and risk him getting injured while playing on a franchise tag. This isnt baseball...long term deals with guaranteed money > year to year deals.
GMAC loves Tampa and this city. That will factor into his contract. Yes, it's a business and he will want fair market value, but he's going to be okay with taking a little less to stay here.I think it'll be in the neighborhood of 10 a year, but front-loaded with lots up front.
If it's front loaded in the neighborhood of "10 a year" what's the cap hit going to be? With Atkins having $31mil guaranteed, expect McCoy's to be more. So if they guarantee let's say $35 mil and pay it out over the first 3 years, the cap hit is roughly $13mil which defeats the argument of the cap hit being lower.

I think ultimately that a tag is unlikely because McCoy will get more in guarantees as an offer from the Bucs than he received on this first contract...which means more than the $35mil he received from his first contract which might be able to be manipulated a little to get the cap number down but it won't be by a significant number. This also could depend on who the GM is at the time.
