Texas booster calls Charlie Strong hire a ‘kick in the face’ Laken Litman    USA TodayJanuary 7, 2014 Mccombs_Zps875A7D7E.jpgTexas Longhorns billionaire booster Red McCombsStrong_Zps9230B8B6.JpgUniversity of Texas president Bill Powers and athletic director Steve Patterson introduce new Longhorns head football coach Charlie Strong. (Erich Schlegel/Getty Images) Texas Longhorns billionaire booster Red McCombs is not exactly pleased with the hiring of new football coach Charlie Strong. “I think the whole thing is a bit sideways,” McCombs said during an interview with ESPN 1250 San Antonio. “I don’t have any doubt that Charlie is a fine coach. I think he would make a great position coach, maybe a coordinator. “But I don’t believe [he belongs at] what should be one of the three most powerful university programs in the world right now at UT-Austin. I don’t think it adds up.” McCombs, who is a dear friend of Mack Brown’s and has the UT business school named after him, felt he and other donors should have been more involved in the search. Last week he stated publicly that he wanted Texas to hire former NFL coach and ESPN analyst Jon Gruden. But new athletics director Steve Patterson and his eight-person search committee went with Strong. “I think it is a kick in the face,” McCombs said. “Beyond the fact of what actually happened. We have boosters that have a lot of knowledge about the game. When we decided to go get Mack — from the time we decided to go get Mack to about 30 hours later to have a press conference here and it was done — we had a lot of input before we went after him.” But despite how anyone feels — fan, coach, donor, Louisville players — Strong is the Longhorns coach now. “I don’t see how they can miss,” McCombs told the San Antonio Express-News last week. “They can get anyone they want. They can close their eyes and go ‘Eeny-meeny-miny-moe’ and end up with someone good.”

I'm in Houston this week working with one of the bigger companies in town.  We were discussing the new hire of OBrien for their head coach.  Their comment was "we'd have preferred Jon Gruden, but hell, everyone wants him".

Translation: Hiring a "brother" for a top 3 college job = "a kick in the face"...probably doesn't help that he has himself a snow bunny, either...#oldwhiteymad

McCombs problem isn't about race. It is about two things:1. He has given the school $100m+ and he feels that entitles him to be "consulted" about things. He didn't feel all consulted with on this. 2. He had delusions, and he even says it, that Texas could hire anyone they want and he was wrong. Texas fans and boosters were always setting themselves up for disappointment if they thought they'd get a "big name".

I do not think it is a race issue.  I think it is mccombs delusional belief that they could get anyone the want.  The names I heard Gruden, Saban, etc and then you get Strong who is probably not the best match for there program that still gets great recruits, but has struggled utilizing all of that ralent.  Strong is an awesome recruiter and defensive coach, but I could see them beeing a bit let down with names previously associated with the job and the final outcome.  Mccombs does come off like a self entitled jerk with his comments.

Who is the racist..the racist, or the person who calls someone racist without provocation based on his opinion, color, and income?Look man, a lot of people think chuck is great, he's one of them. They went against his billionaire wishes, and he's making a big deal about it, that's all.I admit there are racists all over the world, but in the world of football, it really does take a backseat to the color green. If you bought a whole building for a college, would you not expect them to listen to your wishes?I honestly don't see racism in this issue.

Strong is a good coach but I don't know if he's a great fit for Texas where the HC is expected to be a lot more.  Mostly PR stuff.

Im not saying Red is a racist, and Im not saying he isnt a racist.  But, when you say things like "he would make a fine position coach" and you are talking about an accomplished HC at the college football level...it does put off that vibe.

He wasn't good in his press conference. He is not an eloquent or well spoken guy. He's also not a fan of the longhorn network which whatever your opinion of it makes the university a ton of jack. Another concern is that he doesn't have Texas connections so his ability to seal the borders as he put it will be limited.

Ok.  Car dealer, Clear Channel, Blackwater, owned the Vikings and Spurs at one time. Thought the name sounded familiar.

You are obviously ignorant.McCombs owned the Minnesota Vikings back when Denny Green (black guy) was their head coach.
