I guess I don't see how it really matters what a guy is paid -- let alone a HOFer -- when it is not preventing the Bucs from doing anything and they are just one year deals.  The goal is to win not to have the most efficient use of money. The latter can impact the former, no doubt, but its not right now, really. I don't care how much money the Glazers don't pocket, I care abut the Bucs winning.

The fan in me agrees with you. The GM/owner angle may not agree with this line of thinking. All I really care about is what the Bucs are thinking. I realize most fans are going to say keep him at all costs however I don't think front offices think in this fashion.

We have plenty of cap space without trading one of the best corners in football. Not to mention the fact that we have very little talent at CB outside of Revis. Unlike the Jets, we don't have to trade him.

Ryan, why would the Bucs or any team want to exchange Revis' one year deal for a long term deal that pays him up front while keeping his yearly salary at $16 million after ever year but the first? Every team would want a lower salary right, because Revis has a ONE year deal. If he did not take less going forward than the team gets nothing for giving him a LTD and money upfront, right? That's the trade right, certainty and security versus a one year deal?

The short answer to the question is, for this upcoming year along, to create more cap space. Long term without a restructure it is a series of one year deals at $16mil. The question I have, and it appears the Bucs would have, would be does it make sense to pay a guy as much over market value as the Bucs are paying Revis? I don't know what the Bucs answer to that question would be.

I think Ryan hits on something that is the biggest blindspot for a fan but probably matters a lot internally. Teams set values on players and they expect the player to live up to them. I'm guessing that they also have values for positions. Owners come from a ROI world - they spend money, they want to see the return. Cap doesn't factor.

Cap space for what exactly? You trade one of the best cover corners in the game (and potential HOF), for what?

Because he's being paid $6 mil to $8 mil above market. That would be the reasoning....and he's not getting traded at that level either.

So fans feel better about our cap situation and our players salaries...I hope Licht understands the dynamic issue of fan-friendly player contracts.

At 100%, which he will be next season, he's worth it.

Me too. Although I'm certain there are some fans who feel that way.

Because that matters why? Fan friendly contracts are whatever it takes to win games and win championships. He isn't stealing any money out of our paychecks or bank accounts, why does it matter to us. He is a player that can make a complete difference on the field, especially when healthy. The front offices job is to get the best players possible and they went and did that last year by obtaining him. Removing him for draft picks and salary in hopes of getting cheaper players doesn't make sense. Then also replacing him with who? A rookie, one of the lower tiered Cb options in free agency? I just don't get the thinking process of that.

I think all...or most....fans think in this fashion. Based on some comments, I'm not sure the team or league feels that way.

If teams are calling about a trade, they must think it's a possibility.  Does it hurt to listen?  (ok, don't answer that)Still, I don't hear anything from the Bucs to shut down the rumor...
