I'm ok with cutting the guy and getting our 3rd back and the cap space.I've come to terms with it.I hope for something more, but hey - LnL are cleaning up, the right way.
I wouldn't say I'm "ok with it", but I have come to terms with it. It is what it is and there isn't much we can do about it.Now, can we convince PR to stop using SMF and go to Kunenea instead? SMF has probably the worst reputation for MySQL crashes. Also, I believe a Kunena license is like $100.
Ira on the Revis contract and deal:Ira Kaufman ?@IKaufmanTBO · 36m Bucs did well in FA yesterday, but in retrospect the trade for Revis is right up there with the 1986 Bo Jackson fiasco as a bonehead move
Nothing is the Bo situation, that is major overstatement, but its certainly the equal of the Booker Reese/Chris Chandler fiascoes. I still don't understand - at all - why we HAVE to release him instead of just keeping him with a lowered cap number?

He's not taking a paycut so if you're reducing his cap number, you're just pushing cap chanrges into some future year in which he probably won't be here anymore. The team has the cap room. However long he's on the roster, it's better to pay him year-to-year so that when he's gone, he's not still on the cap.

I get that, but he is still playing at a very high level and we can afford him even at that outrageous number. Seems like there is more to the story than just raw numbers, because you don't dump guys that play his position playing at his level.
He's a mercenary. And I'd agree there is something more to it...I'd still rather have 3 good young players than 1 older elite guy. It's obvious LnL are focused on pass rush first. As we ALL have been saying for what feels like 15 years or so...
Do me a favor. Name ten Buccaneer players that are undeniably great and would start on any roster. 10 guys that are 100% safe from being cut and good to use as your foundation to build around. I'll even give you a jump start by including the new guys Verner and Johnson. Go ahead. I wanna see if you can form that list. I can't. Apparently L&L couldn't either. Which is why Revis can't stay. It's more important to have a great team full of good players than to have one elite player. One elite CB on a team of "meh" does not win. And rebuilding that roster of "meh" can take one offseason instead of thee if you sacrifice the one elite guy that is ridiculously overpaid. If Revis would have restructure to a reasonable contract with guaranteed money and a lower cap hit, then he'd be staying in Tampa. Unfortunately he feels the need to charge an extra fee of about $4M/yr to grace Tampa with his presence. So he is gone. And good riddance.

His remaining contract would go from:16.0 16.0 16.0 16.0 16.0to5.6 18.6 18.6 18.6 18.6Then next year, when facing an 18.6 M cap hit, converting 13 M into a signing bonus: 8.85 21.85 21.85 21.85And so on.Basically, you get money that could become dead money if you release him later, an increasing current cap hit, and future cap hits that keep increasing.FRG, your profile icon hurts to look at.

I agree the pass rush is key, of course, but we just signed Johnson (and Verner) and still have Revis. Don't we will still have to face Brees et al? That has the making of a hellacious D and who is left to sign on O that is going to be a difference marker that we can't get? Swap Penn for Collins? How much could McCown want to come here? Certainly not Revis numbers?
There isn't more to the story. They have too much money invested into a position that isn't that essential, especially the way Lovie plays defense. They can release him, not only without financial penalty, but with the added bonus of swapping a fourth for a third in a strong draft. This was very predictable.
@RapSheet: On Darrelle Revis, yes, the #Patriots have been among those who have called to express interest in a trade. Doesn't plan to take a pay cut.
Mark Dominik still sucks...
@RCummingsTBO: Bucs are still trying to work a trade for Revis. Patriots may now be a suitor.
Keep him for as long as possible today. As more teams sign mediocre talent to these big contracts, there'll be less of a chance Revis gets even $12 M on the open market. Denver could've waited but just moved on to Talib. Then maybe he'd be willing to cut down to $12 M and be traded to someone who wants to pay that.

When we're unloading talent, the Patriots are just around the corner, shrugging, saying, "Eh, I guess I could take that off of your hands."
The best analogy that I heard/read was that Revis is a Lamborghini, it is great to have, it is expensive, and it is impractical...for most. I have come to terms with the fact that our team blew it out their azz when they signed him at such a stupid number...he is paid $6M more the next best paid CB in the league...we just need to grasp that concept and move on...I love Revis as a player, but I cannot, with a straight face say that is worth $6m more than any other CB in this leagueIt was a stupid signing and the new owners of the team (LnL) are going to rectify the situatuion...one way or another...it is what it is...
