Sammy Watkins vs. GA 2013

I just had to do a little breakdown on Sammy Watkins because I have yet to find a single accurate scouting report for him. Specifically, his negatives are somehow left out.There is no question that Sammy Watkins is a talented young man. The things he does well are undisputable and are evident in this film. Good route runner who plucks the ball out of the air with perfect form. And he is a powerful runner with the ball. But lets just dig a little deeper on this prospect who all of the internet sites are calling flawless..1:16 Sammy takes the ball on a reverse. Freeze the frame when he gets the ball. There is a huge hole up the gut and it certainly looks like he could get the edge. But when you press play you see Watkins looking indecisive and he doesnt go for the edge but instead he looks indecisive and never gets up to speed, makes one guy miss dances around and gets tackled by a LB. 1:43 Does Sammy run a bad route here? The ball is almost intercepted and it kind of looks like ha coyld have rounded that route out a bit. This one is inconclusive.2:14 Sammy misses a block on a bubble screen. Yes, he did put in an effort but he was unsuccessful on this play.3:00 Here you see the ball fly right over Sammys hands..If you prefer a bigger target like I do, this is a potential negative mark. Mike Evans catches that ball. 3:10 This ball was not thrown very well but hit him in the hands and should have been caught. 3:16 Lack of speed in space is on display. He does not get up to speed. He dances around tries to juke and gets another minimal gain. There. That wasnt difficult. No scouts on any internet sites can find any flaws on him and I just identified several in 5 minutes.Negatives nobody is telling you about:Lack of explosion on end arounds. Dances in the backfield instead of creating speed and using his power to run over defenders. Lack of ideal size. Evidenced by passes being just outside of his range.Perhaps could use a bit of polish on his routes at times. Does not exhibit breakaway speed. Was caught from behind on his TD reception in this game. When he gets his speed up he is a powerful runner who can break tackles but he too often is indecisive and doesnt get up to speed, rendering himself ineffective. Good but not great blocker who missed a key block in this game resulting in a negative play. Overall - I like the player. Who wouldnt? But IMO the current talk of him being a top-5 selection is outrageous. I believe he is probably the 3rd best WR in this draft and should be drafted in the 20-30 range.
