I haven't really seen this scenario mentioned but should Texans draft a QB, how willing would they be willing to pay Schaub as a back up? And what are thoughts that we possibly pick him up should he be released.... I feel other than last season he's been pretty consistent and in comparison to what is out there as FA, IMO, he's a more polished vet and Id place him above any of the FA QB's available now. In other words, Id hold off on drafting a QB unless in later rounds for a Murray, McCarron or Carr and go with best available at other positions in 1st. I'd like to see the first wave of cuts later in off season than force a fit with a vet FA now.....
Schaub is probably the best fa qb right now. With that being said, the best option for us imo, is to draft a qb and dip into fa for a de.

I agree with all this. Not sure why Schaub is so overlooked. Maybe because he's not official free yet. Who knows. One thing is for sure, the Texans aren't going to pay his current salary next year.
Arm strength was suspect in his prime. Now at age 33 there's nothing left on his arm and he throws pick 6's all over the place. We already went through this with Griese.
Easily for a #3 QB, but our #1 and #2 need to fight over the #1 spot, and I just can't see us going into next season with Schaub as the starter if that makes sense.
Other than last year, the guy had 5 straight seasons with a 90+ QB rating. Threw for 4000+ yards 3 times. Career 64% completion percentage. I'm not calling for the Bucs to sign him but he's no chump. Both he and Vick will be 33 in 2014 season. Which is more proven?

I just don't think it's a good idea to sign thrown out 30+ year old qb's. Maybe it puts us over the top for the next year or two (IF it works), but it does nothing for long term. When we have the ability to go for young potential, or wiser average types, I'd have to say the "wise" move will be to coach up a young qb with talent. Especially if we're talking about long term sustainability.
We need the insurance in case our stud should get hurt... oh wait...
