NFL to consider reseeding playoffs purely by record By Chris Wesseling Around the League Writer    NFL.comPublished:  Jan. 3, 2014 at 12:05 p.m. Kap_Zps95Acd286.Jpg    Sanaa-Lathan-And-Colin-Kaepernick_Zpsffa35A33.Png              San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick and actress Sanaa Lathan Both NFC matchups on Wild Card Weekend feature teams with the superior record going on the road.NFL owners have taken notice of the inequity.Among the "multiple ways" in which the NFL has examined potential adjustments to the playoff system, spokesman Brian McCarthy said Thursday there has been discussion of letting the team with the superior record host games even if they gain entrance to the postseason as a wild card."Every scenario has been discussed, ranging from reseeding to one extra game, expanding from 12 to 14 teams," McCarthy said. "Think of a scenario, it's been discussed and remains in play."A potential holdup is that some clubs have "raised the concern that reseeding would minimize the value of winning a division; winning a division now means a guaranteed home playoff game."This is a relatively new issue for the NFL. From the 1989 season through 2001 season, only three home teams with inferior records hosted playoff games. Over the past seven years, however, at least one team with a superior record has been forced to go on the road. This weekend's games will raise the total to 15 such matchups over that seven-year span.Home teams have enjoyed a .575 winning percentage during the Super Bowl era, according to STATS. That figure jumps to .675 during the playoffs.New Orleans coach Sean Payton is the poster child for that homefield advantage. His team is 16-0 at home and 8-8 on the road over his past two seasons. The Saints are winless in five road playoff games. They can end that streak by winning in Philadelphia on Saturday night. Of course, that might help convince the competition committee that the need for change is overblown.

Yes, otherwise you just remove the divisions and have  conferences. Then people will complain about a 10-6 team getting passed on the playoffs in the AFC and an a 9-7 team making it in the NFC. Then you'd have to remove the conferences. If a team wants to get into the playoffs AND host a playoff game, WIN YOUR DIVISION. Keep it that way.

Yes, that's the way the league is set up and all the teams know if they want homefield they need to take their division. If this is being questioned why not why how the Pack are even in the playoffs while the Cards are sat at home with a better record? What about if an NFC team makes the playoffs with a worse record than a team who missed the playoffs in the AFC?No matter what happens somebody wouldn't be happy

Author of the article either never thought through his idea or purposely neglected to mention the many issues involved.  He also barely touched on the reasons for having a divisional system with a reward attached.  I think he just wanted to whine.  Probably posts here regularly.

A potential holdup is that some clubs have "raised the concern that reseeding would minimize the value of winning a division; winning a division now means a guaranteed home playoff game."Because the value of winning of a division has minimized since they went from 6 divisions to 8. They need 8 divisions for scheduling, but some teams are only making the playoffs because the other 3 teams in the division stink and they shouldn't get rewarded with an automatic top 4 seed because of it. And just because there's a powerhouse team in one division doesn't mean the 2nd place (and sometimes 3rd place) team in the division should be stuck with a bottom 2 seed. The 49ers have 6 more wins than the Packers and beat them head to head, being seeded below them is nonsense. Plus opening up the seeding would make the regular season more interesting.

Really?6 more wins than the Pack would have them at 14-2 and with the #1 seed so they wouldn't have been a part of this discussion.

If they actually entertain this idea, then the way to do e least amount of damage to the division incentive would be to ONLY re-seed the wild card game. That would also add an incentive to keep winning games after you have locked up the division. Otherwise, leave it alone.

IMO, divisions are good for rivalries and do matter, so their winners should get home field. Taking that away essentially admits that the only thing that matters is the Super Bowl and no team can be happy with anything else.

No. They shouldn't. The 11-5 Saints shouldn't traveling to play the 10-4 Eagles either. Winning your division should cement you a spot in the post season, but that's it. Team's in very tough divisions shouldn't be punished while team's from very weak divisions are rewarded. Once the post season teams are set, they should be seeded by record and strength of schedule. Noway a 12-4 team should ever go to a 8-7-1 team's house in week one.

Why? Is it that much more impressive that GB back doored into a division that no one wanted that being second in the NFCW where every team would have run away with that NFCN? How about if you want a home playoff game win more games?

Getting an invite to the tourney isn't enough reward for being the best of a crappy division?
