Apparently the Eagles, have decided to put pressure on Dan Synder to change the name of the Washington Football team to something else and have done it by not using the 'Redskins' nickname anywhere in their media guide or on their team site. Should the Bucs do the same?I am not of American Indian decent, but I have a couple of friends that are and they honestly believe that the name is offensive. I'm of the opinion that there is more than enough 'honest' disgust in the nickname that the name should be changed. I believe there are several other names that offer a more honoring name to the franchise that would still preserve the history of the franchise. I think the name should be changed. I also believe the Bucs should do the same thing with regard to Washington. JMOArticle:Posted by Mike Florio on September 30, 2015, 9:45 PM EDTOver the past few years, plenty of media and fans have stopped using the nickname of the Washington NFL franchise, in deference to the many Native Americans who are genuinely offended by the term. For the first time, an NFL team apparently has limited its use of the name. The Philadelphia Eagles, who travel to FedEx Field on Sunday, have referred to the Week Four opponent only as “Washington,” in various places. As noted by Matt Lombardo of 97.5 The Fanatic in Philly (and picked up by TheBigLead.com), the weekly media guide refers to the contest as “Philadelphia vs. Washington” when past weekly media guides this season have used team names. A scroll through the Eagles’ Twitter page shows no uses of the R-word, but has an invitation to fans for “Eagles vs. Washington” this weekend. A similar reference to “Eagles vs. Washington” appears at the team’s Facebook page.Portions of the Eagles’ website make reference to the Washington name, including the NFL.com-generated season schedule and this week’s injury report. Still, only “Washington” appears elsewhere in the site, including in an item regarding film study of the team’s most recent game against the Giants. The Eagles have not yet responded to an email sent by PFT several hours ago requesting comment. If/when a response comes, we’ll share it.If the Eagles have made a conscious decision to refrain from using the name of the Washington team, that’s a pretty big deal. If the name is as honorable and non-offensive as the franchise and the league insist it is, why would any of the other NFL franchises not use it proudly and consistently? At some point, the name will change. If NFL teams stop using the name, the change will come a lot faster than anyone had envisioned.
