BYU was “punished” because they got dominated by the same team twice, whereas Alabama beat Georgia earlier in the year.
It also mattered that BYU wasn’t in the playoff prior to getting their ass whipped again by Texas Tech. That’s why it really wasn’t a punishment for them. They had to win to get in.
