NFL All-Cuts Team: Matt Cassel, not Tim Tebow, is QB as teams trim to 53PETE PRISCO      Senior NFL Columnist    CBSsports.comSeptember 5, 2015 8:56 pm ET  Gard_Zps9Uh8Oprs.jpgDE: Ben Gardner (cut by the Dallas Cowboys) There were a lot of bad quarterbacks let go on the cut from 75 to 53 this week, which makes picking the All-Cuts Team passer a challenge.Do I go with Tim Tebow? Matt Flynn? T.J. Yates? Thad Lewis? Matt Cassel?Let's just say that Tebow isn't good enough to be the All-Cuts quarterback. I went with Matt Cassel, who was released by the Buffalo Bills. He isn't any good either, but somebody has to play there on this team. The Philadelphia Eagles released Tebow on Saturday, a day after trading Matt Barkley to Arizona. The move made the Tebow cult think their guy had made it as the Eagles' third-team quarterback. Then Chip Kelly did what John Elway and Bill Belichick did before him: He set Tebow free. Kelly said he would explore adding another quarterback and said frankly that Tebow wasn't good enough. Why Cassel over Tebow here? I like my quarterbacks to be able to read the field. Cassel can at least do that.Tebow deserves credit for chasing his dream, but at some point it has to sink in that he isn't an NFL quarterback. If he really wants to play, why not try Canada? Or maybe now he will realize that it's time to focus on his broadcasting career. He has a chance to be pretty good doing that.On the football field, he just can't process the information fast enough. Too many people who have worked with him have told me that. You can't play quarterback that way and have success. And let's quit the talk that he won a playoff game so he should be in the league. So did Yates, and the Falcons set him free Friday. It just isn't enough. There are a lot of skills needed to play quarterback in the NFL, and Tebow lacks many of them.As for the rest of the All-Cuts Team, there are some decent players who might be able to help some teams and some veterans who are deep on the slope side of their careers. Most of the final cuts came down to young players as most teams cleared out old, expensive players before this cut. This much I know about this All-Cuts Team: If they suited up for 16 games, this group wouldn't win one game. Not one. Not even if a combination of Bill Belichick, Vince Lombardi, Bill Parcells and Paul Brown coached it.Gard1_Zpstyzug3Vr.jpgRemember Jonas Gray's 200-yard rushing night against the Colts? (USATSI)OffenseQB: Matt Cassel (cut by the Buffalo Bills) -- The Bills save $4 million by sending him packing and sticking with E.J. Manuel behind Tyrod Taylor. Cassel might be done.RB: Jonas Gray (cut by the New England Patriots) -- He had that 200-yard rushing night against the Colts and appeared to be a lock to make their roster. But he's surprisingly out on the street.TE: Joseph Fauria (cut by the Detroit Lions) -- He has some pass-catching ability, but he isn't really much of a blocker. That limits his options.WR: Chris Owusu (cut by the New York Jets) -- He did some good things for the Jets in camp, and some were surprised he was let go. He's been with a bunch of teams, but he does have talent. He's young, too.WR: Hakeem Nicks (cut by the Tennessee Titans) -- After a bad season with the Colts, the Titans signed Nicks and gave him a long look this summer. But in the end, they opted to go with younger players.WR/KR: Jeremy Ross (cut by the Detroit Lions) -- He can be a fifth receiver, but his talent is mostly as a return man.T: Andrew McDonald (cut by the Cleveland Browns) -- He's young and athletic and was expected to be the team's seventh lineman. There's a chance he will be brought back. The Browns are his fourth team, though.G: Ben Garland (cut by the Denver Broncos) -- This former defensive tackle opened as a first-team player this offseason. But he fell down the depth chart. He has some backup ability.C: Barrett Jones (cut by the St. Louis Rams) -- He was a surprise cut by the Rams. He can also play guard and tackle, so there is some position versatility.G: Patrick Omameh (cut by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers) -- He started 16 games last season, but struggled. Even so, he is a young player who will get picked up.T: Austin Pasztor (cut by the Jacksonville Jaguars) -- He started at right tackle last season, and did some decent things. But the addition of Jeremy Parnell made him expendable. He can also play guard.K: Nick Novak (cut by the San Diego Chargers) -- All he did was make 22 of 26 field-goal attempts last season. But he got beat out by a younger, stronger leg in rookie Josh Lambo.Gard2_Zpsibl1Akq7.JpgNajee Goode was Chip Kelly's last cut in Philly. (USATSI)DefenseDE: Ben Gardner (cut by the Dallas Cowboys) -- The Cowboys have great depth up front now -- a major turnaround -- and he was a victim of the numbers game. He missed all of 2014 with a shoulder injury, but did some good things this summer.DT: Josh Chapman (cut by the Indianapolis Colts) -- He has starting experience inside and can help a team looking for depth in their rotation.DT: Darnell Dockett (cut by the San Francisco 49ers) -- Yes, he's coming off an ACL injury, but he can help a team who wants a veteran. He did suffer a rib injury in the preseason.DE: Jason Babin (cut by the New York Jets) -- He can play with his hand down or as a 3-4 outside rusher. He is 35, so age is an issue.LB: Steven Johnson (cut by the Denver Broncos) -- He is a young player who has started and excels on special teams. He will get picked up after getting caught in a numbers game with the Broncos.LB: Najee Goode (cut by the Philadelphia Eagles) -- Chip Kelly said he was his last cut, but was the victim of a deep position. He lost out to Brad Jones, who can play inside and outside. Somebody will pick up Goode.LB: Jameel McClain (cut by the New York Giants) -- The veteran was a surprise cut for a team that doesn't exactly have a stocked group at linebacker. He led the team in tackles last season.CB: Kevin White (cut by the Atlanta Falcons) -- He is a smaller corner who has some coverage skills. Could be a good nickel corner down the road.CB: Marcus Cromartie (cut by the San Francisco 49ers) -- He is a young player who flashed during the summer in camp and in the preseason. The 49ers will likely bring him back to the practice squad if he doesn't get claimed by another team.S: Jonathan Meeks (cut by the Buffalo Bills) -- He lost out in his battle to win the team's fourth safety job, but he has some ability. The 2013 fifth-round pick could help some teams.S: Ed Reynolds (cut by the Philadelphia Eagles) -- This 2014 fifth-round pick flashed some early in the preseason after spending time on the practice squad last year. He's young and worth another look by a team needing safety help.P: Brandon Fields (cut by the Miami Dolphins) -- He has a career average of 46.8 per punt and went to the Pro Bowl in 2013. But he was let go for a younger player.
