Bills promote Joe Brady from offensive coordinator to head coach
Brady arrived as the quarterbacks coach in 2022. He became the interim offensive coordinator in 2023, after the in-season firing of Ken Dorsey.
Brady previously worked as the Panthers’ offensive coordinator, from 2020 to 2021.
So, basically, the end result of the latest failure to get to the Super Bowl was the firing of the head coach — and the promotion of the G.M. and the offensive coordinator.
little different because of open search (HC was fired and then they interviewed), but landing in the same place.
Wait so you CAN fire a coach that consistently wins the division and hire his OC because that head coach was a defensive coach that consistently put out a below average defense and was carried by the offense, so promoting the OC makes a ton of sense and you keep continuity?
You can do that?
Jason, are you reading this?

Crazy, right?

lol, not quite how it played out but that is definitely why I thought it would be an interesting thread.
Its actually similar to the Ravens thread with the QB winning out over the head coach. I think Allen had a voice in the interview process.
As dumb a move as you can do for a first year coach.
Now, when the Bills make the playoffs, and they get booted in the second round by the Broncos, everyone is going to say “Hey man, Brady was the reason we couldn’t move forward in the playoffs, not Sean..”.
Happy for Brady but, this is going to be silly.
that head coach was a defensive coach that consistently put out a below average defense
To be fair to McDermott, his defenses in Buffalo have been far to superior to Bowles' in Tampa over the last four seasons. Here are the four year averages:
Buffalo: Scoring defense 7.25, Overall defense 9.75
Tampa: Scoring defense 14, Overall defense 17.25
And those numbers don't include Buffalo's #1 scoring and #1 overall defense in 2021. Bowles deserved the pink slip way more than McDermott - yet he still got it. Gutless ownership in Tampa.
Yup, an example of how boneheaded the Bucs owners are. They are really fucking this thing up compared to other successful NFL franchises.

like the Bills?
The Bills have never won a Super Bowl. The Glazers have two SBs won with a team formerly known as the Yucks.

Yeah def true but that's a tallest midget approach. McDermott didn't put out a great defense. Both Jax and Denver seemingly scored at will... Granted Allen didn't do them many favors.
I never like to compare anyone to Bowles because he's just so damn bad that everyone seems good.
McDermott didn't deserve to be fired imo but I understand why... Bowles was far more deserving. I'd hire McDermott over Bowles immediately.
But we are stuck with Bowles... We better load up on defense so we can be at least average.

True but the Bills recently have won A LOT MORE GAMES.
Can't get over the hump so I get it but still.
This scenario with the Bills is more interesting than the Ravens and Harbaugh/Jackson because it has the feel now of an inside coup, like Allen complained about McDermott, got his way and basically installed his own guy.
That could be completely off. The move could also pay off and it wouldn't matter. It could also go all wrong. Part of the problem in 2022 was the power of Brady. I think we threw the ball 60 plus times in the playoff loss to the Cowboys when "playoff Lenny" ran over them in Game 1 of the season. Its not always a good thing to have all the power concentrated like that, IF that is what is happening there.
interested to watch

Yes i get the thought process. The one thing that makes it weird is that by elevating the OC its hard to say that they are NOT blaming McDermott alone for the . . . inadequate success lol.
The next thing will be to see what they do in the offseason

There's always a share of blame to go around when a hc is fired. I think in most places when there is a firing that there is share of the blame when you get down to it. It's a matter of money and efficiency with hire. The glazers made a bad decision on who to give their money to and everyone knew it even when they hired him it was bad. But they still invested in bowles and they were wrong. They are a big example of someone who can't admit they were wrong. Unfortunately owners have egos too and are prone to these mistakes.
They won 2 super bowls with a couple moves they made by moving on from people who they needed to move on from and they really missed the boat with this one and chose their ego over everything else. People double down on stupidity all the time. Even our "smartest" and highest earners are getting into this jam. Human nature has a funny way of fucking us over with our decision making consistency. Our original wiring messes us up even again the most intelligent people are prone to this. History repeats a lot because people get so bent up into their ways they can't see straight.
Feel like overall it's like that now with a lot of people who wouldn't want to admit it. But it's true. I don't care what politicians you 'root" for this is happening now. Our highest earners do this from all political landscapes now. Our sports owners are the same. Just not seeing big picture because our human nature is prone to the complex ways our people are. It operates on like we're living in the days when we had to survive. Fight or flight affects everyone. Herd mentality affects everyone. It's not discussed enough and it's in our sports too.
Time to wake up and realize what is happening to people before it's too late.
Bills situation isn't exactly the same as the Buccaneers when you factor in the expectations.
Allen is the best QB in the league and they were expected to at least be in the Superbowl each of the past 4 years and didn't make it once.
Bucs were in a transition in 23'. 24' they had success but came up short and obviously this year was a disaster. Obviously Bowles should have been gone after this year but comparing the two situations is apples to oranges.
