So it's pretty unanimous:  Bowles should be fired.  So who will be the next Bucs head coach?

1)  High Profile: Jim Harbaugh.  The Bucs should roll out the red carpet and hand over the keys for him, but of course he'll have numerous suitors.  Chicago comes to mind, where he used to play and where he'll have great draft picks, the stadium coming. The Glazers have hired the big gun twice before, and it worked both times. So who knows.

2) Retreads.  Matt LaFleur. No thanks, Ron Rivera or Matt Eberflus.  Lafleur had success with Aaron Rodgers and not so much with Jordan Love.  One of his main jobs would be to develop a QB, so the jury is out on his ability to do that.  But he has a lot of experience as an OC, so if he becomes available why not.

3) In House. Dave Canales has actually been mentioned as a possible head coaching candidate for 2024, believe it or not.  Right now it's hard to believe. We saw one good game.  But we have the rest of the year to find out what Canales has to offer.  By the end of the year we might be singing a different tune about Canales... or we might not.  More than likely, he'll be swept out with the housecleaning at the end of the year, but you never know what Licht will do.  He likes hiring from in-house. He hired OC Dirk Koetter after firing Lovie Smith.

4) College coaches.  Lincoln Riley. As everybody knows, success as a college coach is no guarantee of future results in the NFL.  The Glazers tried it once and it was an unmitigated joke. I don't think they'll be anxious to try it again. The coaches who are talked about as candidates usually make more money and have better job security in college than they would in the pros.  But Riley has been rumored to be fishing for an NFL job so I'll throw his hat in the ring. I'm not crazy about going this route though.

5) Offensive Coordinators.   Ben Johnson.  The pool of coordinators looking for an NFL job is unlimited.  The presumption has to be that the Bucs are going to draft a QB this upcoming draft, even if they keep Mayfield as a bridge QB and they want someone who can develop a young QB.  I don't get excited about an OC who has been gifted a top draft pick like Josh Allen or Joe Burrow.  I'm more interested in guys like Ben Johnson of Detroit who has turned around Jared Goff's career.

6) Defensive Coordinators.  Dan Quinn.  If he becomes available he'll be in high demand.  That's a big "if".  Anyway, I don't expect the Bucs to hire another DC after the Bowles experience, and once again drafting and developing a QB will be a priority this offseason.

7) Darkhorse.  Josh McCown.  "The guy is just special. He lives, breathes and eats football. Somehow, he just has a way to capture the entire team. They all love this guy. He's really one of the most special leaders I think I've ever been around."  so said Jason Licht.

And the winner is..... Josh McCown????

Monken?

yeah I would say he is most likely if I were to name one today. Ravens are flying and he has ties to us

he also won’t be the most pursued this offseason and we won’t be the best destination. Ie harbaugh likely to go to a team like Dallas, LA Chargers, Buffalo, Colts, Chicago, LV Raiders, Washington as areas either with better situations or more money to thrown at him.

id say odds Todd Bowles is fired is at 50% but that’s sitting at 3-5. Feel with every loss that happens that will go up each time.

Unlikely but still time to turn this around, but I don’t see it. I don’t think any of us do given this past loss

Monken already rejected us once.  Licht may not want to pursue him again.

The shitty part is we can't pin this on Baker so we gotta keep losing and stick with him. At some point we need to see Trask

Jay Glazer on FOX

“Look, they know what Kyle Trask can do. Right?” Glazer said. “They see him every day. They know what Baker Mayfield can do.

“So I think if they thought Kyle Trask could give us a better shot to win right now, we’d go over and do that. But I don’t think they believe that.”

Basically, the playoffs still possible because division sucks

That's a terrible mindset that can be proven false with countless example. Bucs are at best about to be 4-6. They invested a #2 in Trask. Baker is a journeyman with an expiring contract. At some point common sense has to take over.

Jim Harbuagh would be the top choice obviously. He'd make sure the Bucs had a good run game here amongst other deeming HC qualities he has. I'm fine with Ben Johnson too, but the other guys hard pass.

but he rejected us because we offered him the OC position to a team that had a lame duck head coach. and who would you rather OC.... a team with Lamar Jackson and a franchise that wins; or the Bucs who would have Baker Mayfield on his 4th team in a year and a franchise that sans Brady hasn't made the playoffs the decade prior?

of course, being given a head coaching opportunity is apples and bowling balls; anyone would jump at the opportunity to do that, particularly a team with a top 10 draft pick and talented WRs.

but that's the common sense, they have seen Trask for the last 1,000 days and he doesn't wow in practice; couldn't beat the lowly falcons in week 18 of last year.

they know he isnt the answer.  As mid as Baker is, he is pro bowl material next to Trask

it was a stupid draft pick.

that being said, i do feel he will get 4-5 starts this year as Bucs will likely be out of contention after Thanksgiving.  Feel they may fire bowles and had Canales coach for a handful of games to see what he can do.  Unfortunately for Canales, they will also want to get Trask some playing time.

I'm not blaming Monken for his choice, nor do I think Licht would either.  Nevertheless, it was the choice he made. I just think you have to move on from somebody once they make a decision like that.  I could be wrong, because I don't know what Licht thinks personally about Monken or about the situation.  But I just think in general they wouldn't go back to someone who made a choice to go in another direction.  I don't think it's as much Monken not wanting to come here as the Bucs not reaching out to him.

The Bucs have had the experience all too often that coordinators are sometimes just coordinators with Koetter and Bowles.   We need a guy who is the head coach, even if he isn't the coordinator for either side of the ball.  Dan Campbell was a tight ends coach when he got hired as an interim coach and then head coach of the Lions.  He was never a coordinator.  The Bucs have had success with coaches who have a personality that commands the team, somebody who goes beyond the Xs and Os.  Arians and Dungy were like that, and Gruden to some extent.  That's why McCown may be a surprise choice.
