The Success of Second QB Taken Compared to the First QB in the Top Ten Jan 31 2015, 7:43pm So it seems highly probable that the Bucs will take a quarterback with the first pick and the odds are just as high that another top ten team will also select a QB (or some team will get desperate and trade up). I kind of glossed over the recent years to see what the history was like. 2012QB1 Andrew Luck (First overall, IND) - We all know his storyQB2 Robert Griffin III (Second overall, WAS) - We also know his story 2011QB1 Cam Newton (First overall, CAR) - I think he's a franchise player and has lead his team to the playoffsQB2 Jake Locker (Eighth overall, TEN) - Struggled with injuries and now Zach Mettenberger has his job 2009QB1 Matt Stafford (First overall, DET) - Franchise QB enough to be paired with the best receiver in the NFLQB2 Mark Sanchez (Fifth overall, NYJ) - Fortunate enough to be drafted to a team with a top defense, had some success with Philly. Career highlight: butt fumble 2006QB1 Vince Young (Third overall, TEN) - Didn't live up to the hype and now posts on various sbnation blogs asking teams to sign himQB2 Matt Leinart (Tenth overall, ARI) - I thought he sucked 2004QB1 Eli Manning (First overall, SD) - Even though he throws a lot of interceptions, he does have two Super Bowl rings (both against his brother's nemesis)QB2 Philip Rivers (Fourth overall, NYG) - Can't catch a break. Franchise QB but hasn't won rings like the other QB's in this class 2003QB1 Carson Palmer (First overall, CIN) - In my opinion he was a franchise QB. He was still starting in the league this year until an injuryQB2 Byron Leftwich (Seventh overall, JAX) - Technically he won a ring with the Steelers but Palmer was definitely the better QB 1999QB1 Tim Couch (First overall, CLE) - Cleveland always finds a way to loseQB2 Donovan McNabb (Second overall, PHI) - I hate Philly fans. Got booed during the draft but had a ton of success with Andy Reid. Lost to the Patriots in the Super Bowl (probably because they cheated) 1998QB1 Peyton Manning (First overall, IND) - we all know his storyQB2 Ryan Leaf (Second overall, SD) - we also know his story Compared to the first QB, the second QB generally sucks big time with the exception of the 1999, 2004, and 2006 draft. In 1999 Cleveland, in typical fashion, chose the wrong grail to drink from. 2004 was a great year for QB's so even though Philip Rivers hasn't won rings compared to Eli, I still think he's a hit. 2006 was awful. Just awful. Interesting side note: so it seems like some supporters for Winston / Mariota are staunch believers that Mariota / Winston will be a bust. If that holds to be true and Tampa chooses the right QB no matter whomever the correct answer is and Tennessee decides to abandon the Mettenberger project and select a quarterback, Tennessee will have whiffed on three different quarterbacks in the top ten in a span of ten years. Ouch...link
