Texans Initially Leaning Manziel, Bortles; Bucs Effect?By: Justin Pawlowski - on twitter: @CommishonlineFebruary 4, 2014 8:55 PMComm1_Zps3Ee8E35B.jpg(Photo by Scott Halleran/Getty Images) The Buccaneers hold the 7th pick in the 2014 NFL draft and many around the Tampa Bay area are already trying to decipher what Lovie Smith and Jason Licht might do with their first selection as the leaders of the franchise. Before the Bucs are on the clock, barring a trade, six players will have been selected and off the board for the Bucs. Despite the combine not taking place for a couple weeks, it appears as if the Houston Texans might already have their decision down to two choices for the first overall selection according to former NFL scout Russ Lande. According to trusted sources, the Texans are initially leaning towards taking either Blake Bortles or Johnny Manziel with the top pick. Although Manziel would obviously be the choice of owner Bob McNair, O’Brien is not sold that Manziel possesses the work ethic and intangibles necessary to be the face of a franchise. Lance Zierlein, a radio host in Houston and creator of thesidelineview.com, believes the Texans will ultimately lean towards Bortles with the 1st overall selection.Comm_Zps1E0Dcd06.Gif If the Texans take a quarterback over a pass rusher like Jadeveon Clowney, it makes the likelihood of one of the top three quarterbacks falling to the Bucs pick at seven very unlikely. If Lovie Smith and Jason Licht want one of the top quarterbacks in this year’s class, they might have to trade up with the Rams for the 2nd overall pick to secure that player. If they are satisfied with Glennon and free agency, then they might be rooting for as many quarterbacks to go before their pick as possible. CBSSports.com’s draft expert Dane Brugler also has Blake Bortles going 1st overall to the Texans in his latest mock draft. The 2014 NFL Draft’s 1st round takes place on May 8th.

SO FAR AWAY, its taking FOREVER! I have no doubts there will be some difference makers left on the board at 7.

There has to be, you would think. If it pans out like their sayin here, Bridgewater could be there. I don't think there is much chance that Clowney is there, he would never make it by Atlanta at the latest.  So Lichti and Lovie will have a huge decision to make when that #7 pick rolls around.  But, that is why they get paid the big bucks.

I will be so pissed if Clowney falls to 6th and the Falcons land him.

That would suck big time!  I would hate dealing with this guy twice a year.  Even though I Like Glennon, It would be a sack on almost every play, and I don't think Penn could match up well with that kind of DE.  If Clowney fell that far I bet the Bucs make the trade above Atlanta, I think they should.  If they did then we win both ways.  We will not have to deal with him twice a year, and the other NFC south teams will have to game plan around him twice a year.  Besides I can't think of any player that we are so sure that's going to fall to us.  All the guys we need will be off the board, so if someone like Clowney falls that far then I think you should make the move.  Just my opinion.

I am as big a Manziel fan as anyone but passing up on Bridgewater would be absurd. He's going to do things at the combine that will stun people to go with his already ridiculous game film.

Me too but the truth is the Bucs have the fewest draft picks this year are one of the least likely teams to make a trade up.

Then stop trying to look at it from a number prospective. Look at it from the face of the franchise, work ethics, etc. prospective. The best college stats in the world don't mean shit in the NFL.

So I guess they'll hang on to shaub until they either trade the pick, or get the guy they want.I believe they will act as if they want a qb to get teams to trade, but if they don't get a suitor, they will instead draft clown anyway.Might as well play that card, unless you have an "elite" qb, and they don't. He's good, not great...so they definitely can play that mindgame.

The Texans owner loves Clowney. And Schaub is going on 50 years old, so QB would seem to be logical pick at #1. Although Keenum[sp?] looked halfway decent last season. Or they could make a play for Cassel or Vick.

Schaub will be 33 when the season starts, not exactly over the hill for a QB.

The Texans owner loves Clowney.

When i read these types of absolute statements, i have to question where this info comes from. When/where did McNair profess his love for Clowney?
