Dex, We have a huge difference in opinion in what to look at when judging a college player then. I don't usually care who the competition is or what they are doing. I try to focus on what the player of interest is doing. Looking at one game in which Bortles lead a less talented team vs. a highly ranked defense doesn't exactly seem like an unbiased honest way to evaluate. By your standards, it is impossible to say Bridgewater is good either because he has never played any good teams. All I'm saying is focus on what Bortles is doing, not his opponent. Is he doing it well? Are the things he does successfully because he does them well or because the competition sucks? For me, when he gets instant pressure but jukes a would be sack, keeps scanning the field, and delivers an accurate pass....it doesn't matter who the competition was. He made up for the lack of a great supporting cast and did his job very well. So I pay attention to every game. Now look at a guy like AJ McCarron. His competition is much better, but he also has a much better supporting cast. A great run game, great defense, and an o-line that usually gives him all the time in the world. To me, his job is MUCH easier than Bortles and therefore less impressive...but if you are factoring in the level of competition as such a large part of the equation, then McCarron is clearly the best QB in the draft.
i agree to some extent. when i look at a QB on a less talented team i look to see if he elevates his teamates' play or not. obviously i wont fault a guy if his receivers brick a ball and turn it into an INT or just flat out drop the ball. when a guy is playing teams where he might only face 1 or 2 NFL caliber corners i want to see perfection on their throws. i look to see how they handle a game where the competition level is all of a sudden much higher, thats why i wanted to see how he handled South Carolina. im not going to hold everything against him because his offensive line really didnt give him a lot of help and he had to leave the pocket early and often and he really never had time to let deeper routes develop. i was also dissappointed in how poorly of a job his receivers did coming back to him when he broke the pocket. obviously that isnt Bortles' fault either. when i watch Bortles i dont see a guy who i am ready to annoint a 1st round talent yet. im not a fan of guys from lower levels of competition declaring early. if your competition isnt good i want to see 4 years of you playing instead of 3. i DEFINATELY want to see you at the Senior Bowl. id like to see how he plays when given elite level receivers and elite level DBs, an elite OL and an Elite DL coming to attack him. how he responds, adapts, and overcomes on the big stagewhen i look at a guy on a talented stacked team i like to look at how they play in garbage games as much as i like to see them against top level guys. for example i was dissappointed in Jameis Winston during the Bethune Cookman and Idaho games because he wasnt as sharp when facing garbage competition. his concentration lapses and his desire to make the 50 yard bomb instead of throwing the checkdown or taking the 10 yard out. For AJ McCarron i knew i was right in calling him a 3rd round pick when i saw him struggle against Virginia Tech. they took him out of his comfort zone and he struggled because his OL couldnt let him sit back there in a clean pocket like he did all of last season.
You're both right. You can't just look at the toughest game on a team's schedule and say "That's who he is". Especially when the team playing is more talented at nearly every position on the field. At the same time, I think Dex is spot on about Ponder at FSU. He ran a lot out of necessity, and talent around him definitely hurt his productivity, and I see the Ponder comparison as well. I think Bortles has more upside as a pro than Ponder clearly has because he has a better arm, but there are similarities.

This we can agree on. I think the senior bowl is a very valuable tool, especially for QBs. I think it's why he will likely go back to school honestly. Dude is 23 though and next year would be year 5 and he'd be 24 for the draft, which is kinda old for a rookie QB....so age starts to be a factor too. Plus I don't see his stock being any higher after another year at UCF. I can see several points and counter points for him declaring this year vs staying one more season.

absolutely. Bortles definately has a higher ceiling than Ponder. hopefully for his sake he goes to a better team than Ponder did

yeah i didnt realize he was that old. kinda puts him in a bind but i think his best option is to go back to school for one more year

Are we a better team than the Vikings were that year? I'm going to have to think about that one.

yes but only barely. we actually have a couple of receivers, they had nobody outside of harvin to catch the ball. both teams had a good runningback. our defense is better than the vikings was in 2011 and our OL is about the same, maybe a hair better

Vikings offensive line was really good last season. Kalil, Sullivan, and Loadholt all played at near Pro Bowl levels.

yeah they were good last year but not in 2011 when he first started, they were an absolute abomination
Anyone watching that Bowl game against USC still think Derek Carr is a good pick in the top 10 , and a lock to be a huge upgrade over Glennon ?? LOLLeave it to the last standing Freepologist , Comrade , to think Carr was the answer . Amazing.

Says the guy that thinks there's a chance in hell that Jake Locker would come to Tampa Bay, and that if he did, he would be Mike Glennon's backup. LOLZ!!!I've run out of words to use to describe your idiocy. I'm going to have to make one up.
Calm down Comrade. Carr sucks just like his brother , and u mad bro .
TOP 5 team needsOLOLOLim tired of watching us get manhandled in the trenches. Penn is absolutely awful and Joseph just sucks now as well
If you like Glennon for next year:LTRGSlot WRCBDETEIf not:QBLTRGSlot WRCBDETE
Every team that plays the Ramts needs to start looking for a new LT apparently.
