Yeah. Wright has been solid and I hope he sticks around as depth after Schiano leaves....but he's getting so much hype it's crazy. Alex Smith had a very similar rookie season and he ended up being nothing special and floated around the league for the past 9 years. I can't see passing on a top TE because of Wright. Having two great TEs would be a great problem to have, but having none sucks really bad. Let's not risk it.
I understand where you are coming from, I just feel that a WR would be a bigger upgrade for this team. I see it kind of likeTE- decent upgraded to goodWR- craptastic upgraded to goodI'm not trying to devalue the TE position at all, I just think our recievers (outside of VJax and Williams) are really bad. I would take one of these monstrous tackles over either anyways, so I guess its a moot point for me.
I think we have two very good WRs and can find a good slot in the middle of the draft. There are quite a few very promising WRs in this draft. I see 15+ that grade out really well at the next level. The value at WR is in the late 3rd to 4th round imo. Maybe even the 5th depending on how things shake out. You have just as good a chance of getting a great WR then, as you do in the 2nd or early 3rd. With TE, there are three elite prospects and then a big drop off. We only get one chance to draft one of these three, and that will be at the top of the 2nd round. (hopefully!)So whether you have TE or WR as a bigger need, I think it makes sense to target TE first and WR later.
1) QB (until now still don't know if Glennon is a "Franchise QB"... so i'll take a Rivers/Brees situation over a new Freeman project!)2) OL (Penn + Joseph + Nicks + Zuttah = $27M in 2014)3) DE (need more sacks)4) TE (need a bigger TE)5) WR (slot / need a joystick)CB (nickel back), SLB (Watson/Casillas/Hayward = UFA) and FB (Lorig = UFA)
I like Sammy Watkins, and I think he'll be great....but look back one year. Tavon Austin, DeAndre Hopkins, and Corderrell Patterson were all being pimped as the next big thing too and were taken in the 1st round, and they haven't done much. Meanwhile Kennan Allen (76th) have been outstanding. Guys like Robert Woods, Kenny Stills, and Marquise Goodwin haven't been amazing, but they have been just as good as the WRs taken in the 1st round. I'm just sayin, we don't need a Megatron freak #1 WR. We just need a really good and dependable #3. With so many good receivers in this class we can surely get one in the middle of the draft. No need to take a WR in the first two rounds. Jarvis Landry, Brandon Coleman, Donte Moncrief, Robert Herron, Devin Street, Devante Parker, Cody Hoffman, Josh Huff, Michael Campanaro....these are all mid to late round guys and I bet a couple of them will end up being better than the receivers taken in the first two rounds.
I agree with you with waiting until after the 1st round to take a WR. Unless there is a WR that has the elite talent of a Larry Fitzgerald, Megatron, Dez Bryant or Andre Johnson, I think we can wait and take one later in the draft and still find a guy you can make an immediate impact. The only guy that could be that elite impact player in the 1st round in Mike Evans but I would not put him in the same class as the guys I mentioned above when they came out of college.
I think Mike Evans could be great, but I also wonder if he lacks the explosiveness and speed needed at the next level. Sometimes these big guys do really well verse college competition simply because they are huge....but then fall short of expectations in the NFL because they lack the other qualities needed. I don't know what to make of Evans, but I don't think he is a sure thing by any means. Watkins appears to be the clear #1 WR. He has it all....except height. I don't care personally. I think the entire NFL has this Gruden like infatuation with super tall receivers. Don't get me wrong, the extra size can be a huge advantage, especially with the new rules...but I still think it is overrated. I don't think height is that high on the list of what makes a receiver great.
I see us being in a position where Watkins is going to be the highest rated player avail. When we pick.

I can't see that being the smartest pick for us, but it would be hard to complain. The kid is a great football player. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LkNvLP-WI5g
A stud TE would probably have the biggest impact position-wise, as he would be an asset for both the run game AND the pass game. We sure could use additional athleticism on D too, as we have done a poor job of defending the edge lately. Whether that's a LB, DE, or CB, not sure. Gholston is encouraging, but given our recent failures on D, it wouldn't surprise me to see our first pick be on D.

If you are saying a TE in the 2nd and a WR in the 4th (no 3rd), who do you like in the 1st? Or are you saying you like one of these TEs enough to spend a top 10 on?

....and Tim Wright is surprisingly good...
+1 Wright = Jackie Harris
1. DE2. OL3. WR4. CB 5. Blocking TE
Interesting comparison OBD

They can't make a jersey for your number two pick cbw. Sorry.

$27 million.....great return on investment. Jesus Christ cut them all and get three beer vendors from the stands for the same results. Add VJax to that number and we reallly get squat for the money spent. At least the defense is gradually improving bit by bit but the damn Oline needs to be taken out back and shot.
