I don't think you bench a guy unless they are part of the problem, or an injury is affecting his play. So if either one of those is true then I agree. But if you bench Mayfield, a popular leader, then you are basically telling the rest of the team to phone it in. They already basically know what Trask can do. They've seen him play in practice and preseason. They know his physical capabilities. He'll be serviceable. Most importantly, his play during the garbage time of the season isn't going to cause the Bucs to rethink drafting an impact QB.If the Bucs can't beat the Panthers it is time to see what Trask can do. Not a slight againt Mayfield but that is the reality of the situation.
What has changed regarding the QB position from the beginning of the year? They thought Mayfield was better then, and he has basically done what he was expected to do. I'm sorry for Trask, but feeling bad for Trask is not a reason to put him in. I'm all in favor of putting him in for the last game just to let him get some experience, because he's still under contract next year. He's at best a borderline/ bridge starter, at worst a backup. He's not the Bucs QB of the future.

if a team isn't doing well, a QB is certainly part of the problem.
so other than Brady in 2020 and 2021; ask yourself have the Bucs ever had a QB that was either (A) the solution or (B) not part of the problem
Brad Johnson....not a problem but wasn't the solution.
Mayfield's lack of play making and last in the league deep ball in terms of accuracy is the core issue with the offense. Teams don't fear it and we can't get chunk plays to keep drives alive (which is in the numbers for 1st and 2nd down plays converting to 1st down instead of 3rd). Further, people keep talking how it will tank the team to change QB's because Baker is so loved. I'd argue the defense has already checked out because they see Baker can't score for shit. In fact a large percentage of his TD's have come in the late 3rd or 4th when the team is already facing softer pass defenses trying to keep big plays from occurring. He's horrible at scoring early and the defense is having to work often in first halves of games. Offensively...who knows. Making the switch, if successful, could ignite this team, though I think the season is already pretty much done regardless. I can also guarantee that if Kyle goes out there and lights it up for the rest of the season, regardless of outcome (defense could lose a shoot out or two, for example) I think most fans would be quite willing to see Trask as the starter. There's already a large percentage in favor of him now.
The bottom line is some of you have this outright nasty happen of saying you KNOW, for a FACT, that Trask can't be the guy of the future when we've seen him for 3 plays with the starters (a false start that might not have actually been), a running play, and a nice pass to the back right side of the endzone that should have been caught, per Chris Godwin himself. What from that makes you think he can't play and be the starter?

I just have my opinion, it's not I know for a fact. IMO Trask is OK, not great. He's a big serviceable QB who has limited mobility and not a particularly quick trigger. Bucs fans deserve a great QB if we can get one. Trask is OK, not great. That's my opinion, but I haven't heard anybody come on here or anywhere and say they think Trask COULD BE GREAT. " All people want to see is if he can play in this league. I think he can. He's not great. Nobody thinks he's going to be great.
I want "great". As they say "Good is the enemy of Great". If we move forward in 2024 with Trask, and avoid drafting a QB in the first round, we'd be accepting OK and giving up the chance at great. I want more. I want a top 10 QB which Trask will never be. I want a highly mobile QB with a quick release. Like a Dak Prescott, Jalen Hurts, Russell Wilson in his prime. If we have a top ten pick in this particular draft, there's going to be that guy who at least has the potential to be great. As we've seen with Winston, there's no guarantees. But you have to take the shot if you have it. Just my opinion, not facts.

The QB’s you mentioned were 4th, 2nd, and 3rd round picks respectively. Nobody knew how good any of them would be until they were given snaps.
Trask may suck and lead the team to a better draft pick. Or he may prove to be nothing but a backup. Or he may show he’s a guy the organization can move forward with. The only way to find any of that out about the guy they used a second round pick on is to play him. Mayfield is a known quantity. Continuing to play him is foolish for this organization long term.

I dont know if he can be a starter BUT simple reality say he will MOST LIKELY not be given a chance until Mayfield is injured or the team is out. of the playoff hunt (as slim as that chance is at the moment) You and other Trask fans are basically saying "a first round playoff loss doesn't matter, go to Trask NOW." That is the UNREALISTIC position, right?
In the REAL WORLD a HC like ours is NOT going to see what we have for the future when HE MAY HAVE NO FUTURE without the wins and that should be very easy for anyone (even a Trask fan) to understand. Human beings do what they perceive to be in their self-interest.
Bowles may be wrong. It would not be the first time

in the real world a team with a playoff chance AND MANY PROBLEMS BESIDES THE QB . .. is not typically going to TRY OUT A BACK UP QB while that playoff chance still exists (no matter how slim), especially where the team OBVIOUSLY has issues beyond the QB and has won and SHOULD HAVE WON more with the current QB (Mayfield) at starter.
Simple reality.

I'd argue our chances of beating both the Packers and Jaguars with Mayfield at the helm, and even to some extent the Falcons, is small, so "Playoffs! Are you talking about Playoffs!!" to paraphrase a former Saints coach. I would argue that changing QB's now MAY, or may not, give you a better shot at actually making the playoffs. The best coaches in the league don't wait to make changes like this. They realize what is currently being done isn't working and make changes to get better. Unfortunately, we're stuck with Todd.
We've seen Trask get snaps. We don't know enough to know if he has great decision making and other intangibles that can only be proven by playing in real NFL games. But we do know he doesn't have great mobility and he doesn't have a quick release. Those are two things we can see from preseason football and those aren't going to change. As for Hurts and Dak, no they weren't high picks. But I think they would have gone higher in today's NFL where mobility is more important. If we move forward in 2024 with Trask, and avoid drafting a QB in the first round, we'd be accepting OK and giving up the chance at great. I want more. I want a top 10 QB which Trask will never be. I want a highly mobile QB with a quick release. Like a Dak Prescott, Jalen Hurts, Russell Wilson in his prime

In any case, my point remains that if you can draft a QB you think could be great you have to take that chance, because you're goal is to eventually win a Superbowl, not to win 9 or 10 games. OK if Matt Stafford or Phillip Rivers is on the board, I'd take him. But that isn't going to happen. Short of that, the days of winning a Superbowl without a mobile QB are over. Rolling with Trask, however he does against the mediocre competition the Bucs will be facing, will not change the fact that he won't ever be a great QB.
We're going to need a new coach, and that coach IMO isn't going to want to roll with Trask regardless of what would happen at the end of this year. So I don't see any point as far as the team goes in putting Trask in there. It would be great for Trask, but frankly Trask's feelings and career don't factor in to it.

Go search for the Trask vs. Jets highlight video. I think you'll see that he has plenty of functional mobility. Remember, he was playing behind the second and third string line players in that game, so the pocket collapsed on him quite often. He got out of most of those situations quickly and made some excellent off-platform throws, and of course had the one run where he juked the LB out of his jock strap and got about 6 or 7 on a busted protection. I think too many of you simply pass those things off and don't realize how good he actually played in that game, something Barber pointed out a lot during and after. How many people thought Brady, or Favre, or Young, or host of other top tier QB's would be good, much less great? Kurt Warner was bagging groceries for goodness sakes. You don't know until you TRY. I really wish more people would approach this situation in that fashion, that we don't know until we get a chance to see him play for extended time with the starters.
Imagine how you would feel if he does go out there and just lights it up, rips off 5 straight wins while tossing 2-3 TD's per game and leading to 1-2 more (running TD's by backs) plus a field goal or two? How would you feel then? My whole point on here is that he needs a chance. Mayfield isn't doing it for us and won't be here next year. It's time to move on and evaluate Trask now to see if we need to use the 1st on a QB or not.
If he does that against the 49ers or Eagles I'd eat crow. If he does it against the Panthers I wouldn't put that much stock in it. Again, we've seen him in preseason games. He has "functional" mobility, but not great mobility. We don't need to have the next Lamar Jackson, but escapability to confound the defense and complete a pass when they think they have you sacked. And to run for a 15 yard first down now and then when everything breaks down. Trask can move around in the pocket, but he odesn't have the level of mobility on the level of Dak, Hurts, Trevor Lawrence etc. That's what I'd like to see for the Bucs. That's something Nix, McCarthy, Sanders, Daniels and probably Penix as well all have. Do they have the other important aspects like pinpoint passing and great presnap recognition? I don't know that's a topic for another thread. But the mobility is an important factor, that's what you need in today's NFL to be great IMO. Trask doesn't have that level of mobility.
But we do know he doesn't have great mobility and he doesn't have a quick release.
You keep saying this as if it’s factual. It isn’t.
We've seen Trask get snaps.
Is this serious? He’s had 10 pass attempts in the NFL. It may take a little more than that to evaluate a QB properly.

Well, if you acknowledge there is a chance at the playoffs then that basically ends the conversation, especially when you concede that "changing QB's now MAY, or may not, give you a better shot at actually making the playoffs."
Again, I am not saying a change would be right or wrong because youd have to see the change to KNOW, I am just saying that under the parameters that even you concede its unlikely.

He had more than enough mobility. The GOAT was considerably less mobile, even in his prime, and still won the Super Bowl in 2020, and went 13-4 in 2021.Most QB's that have elite mobility end up getting injured a lot and pretty much always have short careers unless they learn to stay in the pocket whenever possible.
