As much as I thank the Glazers for shoveling out boat loads of money for Nicks, it's time to move on. If the Browns tag Ward, we need to bring in Mack and move Zuttah back to Guard. While we are talking Olinemen, it looks like Penn breached his weight clause, or that clause has been removed. He looked very large and slow Sunday. It's unfortunately that time again.......back to searching for a Franchise LOT.
While I agree some upgrades are needed for our OL...I personally would rather do that through the draft.
I believe we're on the hook for a big cap hit with Nicks next year so considering we're paying him, we might as well give him a shot to earn his spot. I don't mind going Guard/Center in the early rounds of the draft. We've done a better job of pressuring the QB this year but our o-line has gotten worse after a solid few games in the middle of the season.

Its a decent cap hit, but sadly I still feel better about paying him for what he can possibly bring to the table rather than paying Joseph and Zuttah a combined $10mil knowing what we will get.

The accelerated bonus money would create a $7.1M dollar cap number, but that is money that has already been paid. If they keep him on the team they have to pay him a new $7M (base salary) and his cap number is $9.4M. He would have to be in perfect health to warrant that money, and even then we're talking about a guard.

Saw something last week about his playing career being in jeopardy with the toe and the MRSA...anyone heard any more about that? I would prefer to have a healthy Nicks playing, but would rather he walk away now if he is facing long term medical stuff.
You gentlemen are of the mind that Nicks is coming back. I'm of the belief his career is over. Nerve damage, numbness and lack of feeling in his foot. I can't see how he can play another down.Mack is 28 and in his prime for an Olineman. I will always choose the known over the unknown as long as the position/age dictate it a wise move. In this case, going after Mack is a wise move.

are we still taking Cap hits if he takes an injury settlement and retires?

You are right, I assume those under contract are going to at least "attempt" to come back. Anything short of a retirement by him (which I think would be a win/win for both) will more likely keep us from throwing money at the OLine. We have a lot of money wrapped up in an under performing group.

Im not 100% sure, but I think if he takes either of those routes it wouldnt show up on our cap hits.

seems a bit unfair to hurt a team's cap if a player has to retire because of injury, poor play is one thing but career endind injury is too harsh
If he retires it still shows up against the cap as $7.1M. It's not really unfair because the Bucs chose to give him that restructure bonus AFTER he had the surgery.

Davin has not played well, at all, for most of the year. I just see no way he can return to this team. He's a captain so I wouldn't demote him to a back up role, i'd just flat out release him.
I think we have two guard positions to fill. I would fill one of those with penn. the guy has declined but I think he would be a good guard. Next, I draft a LT in the first round. Lastly, I fill the other opening through FA, and zuttah gives you the flexibility to go after your favorite guard or center.

If what PR is hearing is correct then Nick is indeed done with the Bucs and likely his career also. I petitioned for Ben Grubbs over Nicks and I hate being proven correct damn it.
