I'm not certain there is ANY cap hit if we release Nicks. He didn't get any signing bonus and according to SR, all his guaranteed money has already been paid:From SR: "The offensive line has been very inconsistent this season and is indeed overpaid. I doubt that Bucs left guard Carl Nicks returns to the team in 2014. The Bucs no longer owe him any guaranteed money and some within the organization believe his career is in jeopardy due to his toe injury, toe surgery, contraction of MRSA and toe surgery to deal with that. "I'm not a contract guru, but if there is no signing bonus and all the guaranteed money has been paid, why would there be any cap repercussions if he was released?

Dominik restructured it last year, giving him an $11.8M bonus. Bucs will have ended up paying Nicks $27.4M for 9 games.

I remember him getting that big pay out, don't remember if that fullfilled our obligation for guaranteed money or not. If it was then his salary for next year is very very cheap, under a million if I remember correctly. In that case we should bring him into camp for that small amount of money and see if he can regain any part of what he was. If we do believe he is done then just cut it and get it over with. Either way we need big time help in the interior of our line. Our RT position is solid, LT is seviceable. We could switch the two and try to get another year out of Penn. I don't mind Zuttah at Center but he needs help from a couple of decent to very good guards.

Whatever anybody thinks of Zuttah's play as a Center, he's a weaker Guard.  I'd only want him playing Guard if he's replacing Joseph's poor play. But yeah, Mack's a stud.  He's been one of the best Centers in the NFL since he's entered the league.

I'll ask here because the Nicks thread has been hyjacked. Is he not on IR because that effects our ability to cut him in the offseason? I know there is a problem with cutting or trading guys on IR sometimes. Any info?

BucNY, I think it has something to do with the guaranteed money and perhaps some conditions written into his contract about allowing us to cut ties with him. At least that's the only thing that makes sense to me at the moment. If his guaranteed money is payed out over each game played, then we are suffering him on the roster so that we won't have to have him on the roster next season. The smart thing might be to allow him to rehab over the off season and bring him to training camp and see what he has, if he doesn't have anything left we could cut him. However, if we want to put that 7M savings to use in FA, then we very well could part ways with him prior to camp.

Nicks' injury is basicly turf toe.  That type of injury has ended a bunch of careers.  I just don't see how a guy his size could play on that.  It will never fully heal.  A skill player has his speed compromised, but a trench guy loses his ability to plant and drive.  That's not even factoring in how bad it would hurt to get it stepped on (which you know some people would go out of their way to do) and the potential for other injuries due to favoring that foot. All that said an 80% Nicks is still our second best lineman.

WIth Penn's recent performances, I'd agree with that 100%.

Getting Mack would be awesome. Could move Zuttah back to guard. Kill 2 birds with 1 stone. Cut Joseph and Nicks. Resign Meredith to play RG.

I'm not impressed with zutt and never have been. The same problems I have now, were the same back then.He needs to be bigger, or at least bring in a center who is. If we're going to have seven foot tall qb's, we can get away with using a very large center. But imvho, linemen should pretty much be giant bouncers. His snapping has improved, but not to the point where he's not expendable. When he faces tough competition, or a loud environment, he will barf up one or two real stinkers.

Why would you move Z to guard when he is a much better center? Makes no sense. Just go get what you need. Two guards.

Not sure about moving Zuttah to guard.  Seems like he's a better center than guard.  He's best suited as a versatile backup than a starter at either spot IMO.People are living in denial about Nicks.  His career is done.  It's been over a year.  If he can't play now, how in the world anyone expects that to change is beyond me.  Even if he manages to ever get on the field again, he will be a shadow of his former self at best, and it will be only a matter of a short time before he injures himself again playing on an unstable base.It sucks that we are in such a difficult QB  position.  I'd love nothing more than to spend a top pick getting an elite LT, but it's going to be hard to roll with Glennon unless more than a couple of teams go QB before us.Its really a result of our FO's retarded allocation of resources. Years of Dominick picking bust after bust, then Schiano putting premium picks on a RB and safety and first second and third rounder on CBs.

Zuttah can be a suitable Guard. Alex Mack is a much better Center than Zuttah. You get Mack, draft the best can't miss LOT Dotson stays put and let Merrideth and Joseph fight it out after Joseph takes a pay cut. Have Penn take a pay cut or release him, and keep Penn around for Tackle depth.
