Should we trade Donald Penn? Feb 10 2014, 4:51pmPenn_Zps4E5B4D82.JpgDominique Penn is married to Donald Penn II and is the mother of their two children, Donald Penn III and Dominick PennThere has been a lot of debate in regards to Donald Penn, whether or not he had a good year. Many have said he is getting old and has declined as a tackle. Others are saying he actually had a pretty good year and there is no need at this position. I have also noticed that many mock drafts keep listing OT as a position of need for Tampa, when personally I feel like we just need guards (in regards to the offensive line). My question to you Buc Nation is how would you feel if we traded away Donald Penn? and if we did, what draft pick do you think we would receive in return. He is expendable, underwhelming, and overpaid. He runs his mouth like he is HOF.

As long as we don't have a stud LT to take his place....he is worth his weight in gold. He isn't nearly as bad as many on here try to make it seem. He is getting older though and he does seem to fall off late in the season. Still, the interior o-line needs to addressed first and is a much higher need.If we did draft a LT or sign a replacement in FA, there is only $600k in dead money for trading/cutting Penn. We'd gain $7.5M in cap space. Something to consider when looking at free agent LTs next month.

We could replace him with Dotsen and find a RT, which would be easier to find.  But I'm fine giving him another year as well,

I think that idea is pretty popular here on the redboard, but personally I think that is very risky. Dotson looked very good last year at RT, but it does not mean he can play LT and look good vs. the best pass rushers in the league. Also, outside of Penn and Dotson we have zilch. A better idea would probably be to get a 3rd OT on the roster before we consider doing anything else.

Im betting he restructures and Lovie and Licht  try to find quality depth and a possible replacement in the draft.

If they draft Robinson or Matthews they can slide Penn to guard. With 2 years, $16M left on his contract with nothing guaranteed, he's prime for a deal for less money but with guarantees. For example 3 years, $12M, $6M guaranteed.

Penn had his worst year in awhile IMO. His weight is always an issue and his play declines as the year goes on. Hate to see what he looks like if the bucs end up in the post season. That said he's still a good LT and no need to replace him unless they have a suitable guy to take his spot. Never a fan of creating holes for reasons other than replacing that player with an upgrade.

moving Dotson is a little risky for both Tackle position.you find good LT early in the draft and good LT doesn't hit free agency every year.imo this is a good year to replace Penn... next year could be different in the wrong way.if you can sign Veldheer, Monroe (both are top 10 LT with pro bowl potential) it's a no brainer...if you draft Matthews or Robinson, you may need to sign a stopgap for a year, Collins is an option, i like Saffold who can move inside at RG, he was nearly dominant at this position with the Rams... Dotson could be last option...but no matter who you sign or draft, Penn have to go if he dont take at least a $2M paycut!plenty of good option this year: Veldheer, Monroe, Collins and Saffold are as good as Penn for the position... and Matthews/Robinson have great potential...

The question is, do you want to pay for a top 10 LT? How much is that going to cost? If you draft a guy who can replace him that is one thing but using the Dominik method and signing a high priced free agent is stupid. Keep Penn. No way you can restructure his deal. He is great value already. The bigger problem is that if you ignore the guard position and try to fix a position that doesn't need to be fixed, that just doesn't make any sense. Then you will still have a crappy OL.

Penn averages $7M per year which makes him the 15th highest paid LT. I don't see how anyone thinks restructuring is an option. I would say he is somewhere around the middle of the pack as far as all 32 starting LTs go.....so he is being paid exactly what he should be. He's not going to take less.

The wear on those tires is going to start showing. We would be best served getting what we can for him now, while he still has some value. His dropoff is soon to come.

You are probably right, but we just have so much else to do this offseason....I'm not sure it makes sense to try and replace your serviceable LT right now.
