Penn averages $7M per year which makes him the 15th highest paid LT. I don't see how anyone thinks restructuring is an option. I would say he is somewhere around the middle of the pack as far as all 32 starting LTs go.....so he is being paid exactly what he should be. He's not going to take less.

bullshit for 2014 and 2015 he's the 9th highest paid OT... he's making top ten money!

The question is, do you want to pay for a top 10 LT? How much is that going to cost? If you draft a guy who can replace him that is one thing but using the Dominik method and signing a high priced free agent is stupid. Keep Penn. No way you can restructure his deal. He is great value already. The bigger problem is that if you ignore the guard position and try to fix a position that doesn't need to be fixed, that just doesn't make any sense. Then you will still have a crappy OL.

Penn's $8M cap value for 2014 is top 10 money (9th highest OT cap hit)... he isn't great/good value!Veldheer or Monroe are going to command contracts likely in the range of St. Louis' four-year, $34 million commitment to Jake Long... $8-9M per year deal, it's nearly the same cap value for better production and pro bowl potential!Saffold and Collins should cost $6-7M per year(Levi Brown/Sam Baker deal) with low guaranteed money or a one-year prove it deal worth $4-5M... if you release Joseph and Penn you have $13M more in cap space (and your draft pick) to replace below average production at LT and RG!people want to keep Joseph & Penn... then what? you play with an aging average oline and still have to rebuild in 2015!unless you start the rebuilding process through the draft this year you have to sign some FAs!which good LT is a FA next year, if we pick 15-20 next year and there isn't a good LT outside the top ten pick, you keep a 32/33-year old Penn for 2015?we have to draft/sign two OGs this year... maybe three (Nicks?)

The wear on those tires is going to start showing. We would be best served getting what we can for him now, while he still has some value. His dropoff is soon to come.

You are probably right, but we just have so much else to do this offseason....I'm not sure it makes sense to try and replace your serviceable LT right now.

You have a point as well jd, but, if we find an elusive qb, or a qb with a quicker release, that's not as much an issue anymore. We have  two qb's in a row who take to long to throw the ball. Change that, and the system works better (w/wo penn). Also, like freemab, it would suck to get nothing for him. Imo, penn could go any time now. Two weeks in, he pops knee... we go from possible second rounder, to nothing. I shudder to think about it.AND, if you want them to trade up for manziel, bort or, teddy, ..someone has to go. Revis may be the only other option for trades, and idk if they would spring for that.I'd trade 'ol Buttblock in a millisecond if I knew 100% one of those three would be our qb (especially manziel). And as far as replacing him goes, I believe he's a bit overrated. A solid prospect, or dot could take his spot without a lot of drawback. Even if it is a tough position, I think we have to account for his age and wear. By the time midseason comes, we might be wishing we had a younger player who could take the nfl beatings better.

He made $24M over the last 4 years which is an average of $6M/yr. Now he'll make $8M this year and $7.8M in 2015. That is not top 10 money. Unless you wanna cherry pick one year instead of looking at the entire contract. The top LTs in the league make $12M/yr. Whether you look at Penn's $6.9M/yr average, or just the $8M he'll make this year...he's still being paid like a middle of the pack LT.

LOL i dont care what he got in 2010, 2011, 2012 or 2013...if you want to look at the deal that way, take a look at how much was the deal for a LT in 2010, the year he got that deal... if you dont take old top rookie contract it was Top 5 money easily!in 2010 Andrew Whitworth $6M per year, Joe Staley $5M per year in 2009, Michael Roos deal in 2008 is an average of $7M per year... Jason Peters was one of the top 3 LT in 2010 and got $10M per year, now how much do you think one of the top 3 LT in the game get paid in 2014? $12M per year? $13M per year? how much do you think Dallas and Washington will have to pay to keep Tyron Smith and Trent Williams?maybe we should take a look at Deion Sanders past deal, then Namdi past deal and Revis last year? i'm looking at the average money spend for 2014, 2015... not past year... now he is the 9th highest cap hit in 2014, he is the 9th highest cap hit in 2015... and you know what Penn wasn't and wont be in 2014? a top ten LT, at best he was nearly top ten one or two season... 4 years ago!

How can you guys even think about getting rid of a 350lb offensive lineman, who can dunk the football over the crossbar ?

If a renegotiation cannot be achieved. I wouldn't mind signing Rodger Saffold.

the crossbar is only 8 feet above the ground...you know it's easy to want Penn out of Tampa, you just have to watch the Rams game or 2012 tape against the Vikings...+ i'm sure there is people on this board who think Penn should stay for $8M a year and Jared Allen is only worth $5M per year...

Penn will probably get the axe this season.Someone will, because there has to be a shake up after a huge staff change. My guess, most of the ol gets to kick rocks.

I'm not so in love with Penn that I would be upset if we got rid of him. All I am saying is we have to have another legit LT on our roster before letting him go. You can't just trade/cut him and hope you get a replacement in the draft. We either need to sign his replacement in FA first, or we need to hold onto him until after the draft to make sure we get a suitable replacement. He is not a s horrible as some seem to think and you simply can't gamble at that position.

The crossbar is ten feet off the ground, the same height as a basketball hoop.

B-ball rim and NFL crossbar are both 10 feet high.  Penn used to brag he could dunk a basketball, and I took it with a grain of salt. But after he dunked that pigskin over the crossbar, I believe him now.He has done pretty well for himself really. Being an undrafted free agent from a small school, to being a reg NFL starter for all these years, is not easy to do.  He is getting older now, and making weight could get more and more difficult going forward.  But I would make sure I had an upgrade ready to step in, before sending him packing.

Penn was pretty damn good this year. Helluva lot better than Collins. L &  L fail.

Most of the moves did not work out, maybe we should just move on.  Penn is no longer a to 15 tackle, but I was an advocate of swapping penn and Dotson or we could have moved him to guard.  He would have arguably been our best OL at a different position and the one thing we missed is his tenacity on the OL.

Makes perfect sense, but he was making some serious green at that time. And they may not wanted to pay a guard that kinda money.

They paid Mankins $6.3M while giving up Wright and a 4th. Getting rid of Penn and Zuttah were just dumb moves made by dumb people.
