Bucs can keep Evans, Winfield, David, mayfield and wirfs

all of a sudden the cap becomes hard to manage? Come on guys. It’s not one or the other.

all those guys should and will be back

So, what would those deals look like, factoring in the cap, dead cap, rookie pool allocation, etc.?

funny you should ask. pewter report just wrote an article on it today. Explains it very nicely

Cliffs: They can bring everyone back if they use void years. I can also buy everything everyone I know wants for Christmas if I just simply max out my credit card.

The real question is why do cap gymnastics and sacrifice the cap long term to keep a team intact that is 4-6 outside of the NFC South. If we were in 5 or 6 other divisions all the talk would be draft and rebuild.

So yes, let’s overpay Mayfield with the Void Years credit card. It will surely work.

I'm just guessing that he's going to have confidence in his ability to continue to add pieces through the draft.  Last offseason, the Bucs were very stingy about adding veteran FAs.  Of course that was due to the cap restraints, but I don't think that is a one year plan.  I fully expect that they'll try to continue to build mostly through the draft while trying to stay competitive by retaining and resigning veterans already on the team (except Devin White).  They'll probably add a couple bargain free agents and try to find the next Barrett or Edmonds but nothing huge.  After the apparent success of this year's crop, Licht will have more confidence than ever in his ability to build through the draft and get guys for the 53 man roster in every round and even UDFAs.    I don't think they'll use void years at this stage.  Could be wrong.

That’s essentially the point I was making.

how they quickly forget. When was the last time this franchise made the playoffs without Tom Brady, GOAT, at QB?

yeah. Making the playoffs is a big deal for this franchise

the cap is usually a big ball of nothing. It’s something beyond performance on the field that people use as a separate critique of the GM, almost always in the negative. Sort of like critiquing the way someone makes sausage… that sells

we are almost making the playoff while intentionally taking a year to clear space after winning a Super Bowl. As far as I can tell there’s no thread here crediting Licht/Greenberg.

I'll always take playoffs over playing for a pick if we are in the hunt.

But if you're eliminated then just bench the starters. Play Trask.

yeah that’s sensible and everyone agrees.

problem is that won’t be this year. Even at 8-9, with win over panthers in week 18; Bucs will have a chance to win division with a falcons win over saints; in a scenario where we are all 8-9, Bucs get in

So the only scenario I see Trask getting playing time this year is if Bucs win the next 2; week 18 becomes meaningless except for a thing called momentum but could see them resting starters as a mini bye

The Bucs won't be eliminated prior to Week 18.  I won't go into detail, but the bottom line is that even if the Bucs lose the next two games they will not be eliminated.  They would have a favorable tiebreaker situation if it comes down to common opponents.  It's not worth it to try to break that down too much when tomorrow's games change things.  But there is almost zero chance the Bucs will be officially eliminated before the last game.

The only chance for Trask to play is if the Bucs go the other way and clinch the division prior to Week 18 by beating the Jags and Saints and the Falcons lose to either IND or CHI.  Then the Bucs would be 9-8 at worst and the Saints and Falcons would be 8-9 at best. Then they might give Trask a start.

By the way, the Week 18 game times are all "TBD" so they will probably schedule the two NFC South games at the same time, leaving no opportunity for the Bucs to wait and see what happens with the other game.

This is one reason why the Bucs might still fall apart.  Do the. Bucs have the discipline to ignore all the positive coverage and come out and win these last few games IF/WHEN THEY DONT NEED TO?

Even if the Bucs fall apart and lose 50 to 0 to the Jaguars and the Saints, they won't be officially eliminated before Week 18.  We will still be going into the last game with a chance to win the division depending on what happens in the Saints-Falcons game.  They still would be 7-9 and the Saints would be 8-8 with the Bucs holding the tiebreaker of common opponents. If the Falcons beat both of their opponents, that would put them at 8-8 so at that point the tiebreakers get complicated.

It's probably mutual on getting something done for at least next couple to 3 years. We can and maybe should draft a qb over that time but at least baker is proving he can get it done with the team in front of him and that's probably good enough for the bucs and baker. They needed each other at the beginning of the year and I think they'll continue to need each other if they want to build on what's been done this year. Grass is not always greener although taking the cash isn't a awful idea for him either. Probably not ideal for bucs but they would just turn the page with Trask and still probably draft someone anyways. I'll say this I've enjoyed the bucs this year. I think the entertainment value is there over last season for example with the goats final season. Which maybe sounded tougher on paper than actual product lol. And we can say that about several seasons. Actually had some fun this year. I thought this year had disaster written all over it. Not the case.

Yeah I agree.

last year sucked. Most buc fans went in with the expectations that we would be close to the 2020 and 2021 seasons but just could never get it together

it was brutal but obviously greatful for the first 2 Brady years. Felt like a patriots fans for 800 days lol

this year, for sure much more entertaining. First time we may make the playoffs, without Brady, since 2008. Can’t take that for granted at 8,9 or 10 wins.

division sucks but 9 or 10 wins is typically playoff worthy

This would give rise to a scenario we might have to call The Hypocrisy Bowl. Trask fans calling for him to play in a meaningless last game even when many of them probably criticized Bowles for sitting starters before.

lol

It's "grateful".

And, you should be "grateful" for all 3 of his years.

Not his fault he had a clueless jackass at OC his last season.
