I'm torn on him. It's hard to grade him properly with how much time he's missed but that's also part of the grade to some extent.
I'm not a big PFF guy but they have him pretty low at 50.4 so he's bottom third.
Pass rush he's pretty good, run defense he's atrocious.
8 sacks and 39 pressures on the year is pretty dang good considering the time he missed.
He seems one dimensional to me and given the draft capital we used so far I'd grade him a C+.
I love what he brings with the pass rush and we also have very little threat on the edge.
He's got to improve vs the run and he's got to get his hands up. Zero batted balls.
Eye ball test for me is exactly what the numbers say. He's a pass rush specialist and should come off the field on running downs.
C+ draft grade.
C- on production.
B on production adjusting for time missed.
Am I off?
Am I off?
I don't think so. You definitely see the talent flash, but he's got some work to do to become a better overall player.
The Bucs are 5th in the league in rushing yards given up. Somebody is stopping the run. Of course, Vita Vea is reason #1, but he can't do it alone. Kancey was drafted to be complementary to Vea, not to be another Vea. His run defense is atrocious? How is that possible? Somehow the runs are getting stopped.

Because there are 10 other guys on the field.
The Cincinnati Bengals have the #1 passing offense in the league. Do you also think that every player on that passing offense is great? Do you think Cordell Volson is one of the best pass-blocking Guards in the league simply because he's on the #1 passing offense in the league? That's not really how it works.
Kancey is doing great. He’s a huge part of the reason our run D is so strong. I think he’ll start to show out in the playoffs if he’s truly healthy.

One of the problems with PFF is there is no fully reliable way to account for what the actual players are trying to accomplish on any given play
Not saying that explains his grade, just that its one of several.

Speaking of which I saw that ex Buc Alex Cappa got the triple crown of most sacks, most pressures, and most penalties.
Helluva year

Our run defense is strong because teams pass at will on us... Or at least that's part of it.
Kancey doesn't show up in the run game often... Not often enough for where we took him.

Oh for sure... I take PFF with a grain of salt and they're big Kancey haters.
But I still feel like his pass/rush defense are pretty accurate.

Thats definitely a big part of it.
It’s why it’s so key that the offense is able to hit quick short passes with a healthy ability to run the ball.
Keeping our defense off the field, in neutral field position, and the ‘skins needing to throw & susceptible to pressure. That style works best in the 2nd half. If not, it’s our Achilles heal.
Likely also why we’ll need to receive, score on first position, and maintain an early lead in the first half.
’skins have their own issues…but our defense is only strong against the run because we commit corners/safeties to pressure packages.
So then the weak part of the defense isn't the middle of the run defense. Most of the rushing yards came in the first half of the season when Kancey was out injured and working his way back into shape. The second half of the season when Kancey was fully healthy and that's when the run defense was at its best In the last eight games the Bucs have held opponents to 91 rushing yards or less. In three straight games they gave up 32, 31 and 39 yards rushing to the Chargers, Panthers and Cowboys. Kancey has a 71% snap count, higher than Vea's 67%. I guess Kancey was garbage when they were giving up 30 something yards per game. He must have given up at least 10 of those yards all by himself!Kancey is doing great. Part of it maybe, but if nothing else Bowles is a committed run stopper, to a fault even. He's usually going with 5 at the line etc. You can find someone like Chris Simms railing against Bowles for it this year and in the past:
"“I don’t even blame the secondary players for the Buccaneers. I blame Todd Bowles for that defense and what he did,” Simms said. “Always put the pressure on the money of your defense. And their money is they have Suh, and Vita Vea who’s 340 pounds, and [Jason Pierre-Paul] and Shaq Barrett, and they have these guys. That’s the strength of their team. How bout you like let them see if they can stop the run, first. Ok. And you have two middle linebackers that are good, too. What are we like worried about? Call their bluff, at first.”

You've already proven you don’t understand how there can be a poor run defender on a good run-stopping team. That horse is dead. You don’t have to beat it anymore.
You're right. I don't understand. Not when you are talking about a starting DT who takes 71% of the snaps, more than Vita Vea. You football experts sure have insider knowledge that I don't. That analogy to the Bengals offense proves it. What I thought (and I now stand corrected) was that defensive tackles are the first line of defense when it comes to stopping the run, more important than the other 9 players on defense. But now you've cleared it up for me. Thanks.

I am not sure why anyone would expect Kancey to be a great run defender? That not who he is. He's 280(ish) playing inside, but because of his get off.
He contributes to the run defense by wreaking havoc with his speed, not being a wall like 350lb Vea.
From the Bucs website during his rookie season:
"There were a bunch of them [tackles for loss]," described Bowles. "Just getting them out of their comfort zone, that was our number one job. We knew if they stayed downhill and got Henry rolling it was going to be a long day for us, so we penetrated, got across the ball and made some plays."
Kancey silenced the doubters against the Titans by turning a perceived weakness into his calling card against one of the best in the game – King Henry. Overall, the Bucs held the Titans to 42 total rushing yards, with Henry accounting for just 20 scrimmage yards, his lowest total in any game dating back to the 2017 season.
In the fourth quarter, Kancey dropped Henry for a loss of three on second down, which set up third-and-nine. The instinctive play helped set up a Nick Folk 27-yard field goal. Earlier in the third quarter, Kancey stonewalled Tyjae Spears in the hole for a loss of two, which put the Titans in unfavorable down-and-distance. Kancey wreaked havoc up and down the line of scrimmage, disrupting the backfield like a man shot out of a cannon. He displayed remarkable balance, explosion, twitchy feet and high motor on Sunday, emboldening the Bucs' defensive unit with explosiveness."
I will take his 7.5 sacks. I think he has one more TFL than Vea, in 4 LESS games . .. and Vea is having a STELLAR YEAR.
