His contract isn't bad. He got all his guaranteed money in the first year so he can be cut with no penalties or cap hit if he screws up, and his average salary makes him the 17th highest paid WR in the league. Seems like the perfect contract for a guy that shows amazing potential, has great production, but serious character concerns.
Yea, and I would take a 3rd for him. A change of scenery might be good for him. I wonder if the new regime has Bill Belicheat on speed dial on their phones still.
We could have gotten a 3rd rounder all day.....until Dummynik screwed up with this deal that is . Now no one will want to trade for him now unless we are giving him away.
His 2014 cap hit is peanuts so we are giving him away if we trade him.
They are on the hook for the rest of it though .If they are giving up a quality pick they want him for more than 1 season.
Welcome back to the NFL, Lovie... Just imagine the outcry if Dominik HAD let Williams walk rather than extend him. He was already being held up by Michael Bennett...
A team that has cap issues and no WRs would love to have Mike WIll for a 3rd and $1.8M. It would be a one year prove it deal for him, and if he stays out of trouble and performs, then I'm sure that team would have no problem continuing to pay his contract...which is the 17th highest for a WR. If not, then they cut him with no penalty and all they lost was a 3rd. I have a feeling he would blow up in New England. Bill seems to have a lot of success with talented dummies.
Should have traded him

They'd have no issues being on the hook if he excels if not they cut him. It's little to no risk to them so a perfect trade. I'd be shocked if the Pat's didn't take him if we offered a trade or released him.
I don't think you can assume you are out of the woods if Mike behaves for one season. Dude sounds like a ticking time bomb.

Talib has been fine outside Tampa. William's is a far cry from Talib so it should be easier for him.
you guys would trade half this team if it involves a "draft pick'" . lets see if this makes sense....trade him now and gamble on an unproven rookie maybe two over a guy who had great production with an incompetent staff for basically his whole career. lets not kid ourselves.....this team hasnt had a real coach in five years. nor has it had a real scheme. we were being laughed at by other teams on both sides of the ball with probably the most talent on defense we have had in a long time. lets not trade one of our best players before we know all the facts. to me anyone who didnt fit gregs idea of a football player was not utilized here. too bad his idea was all work, no play and people didnt want to show up for work at all. lets see what its like with a real staff
I've never been a fan of this joker...lots of physical talent but clearly not a student of the game....or much else it appears....and yet another feather in Mark D's cap.
Takethat ,Patriots also were not dumb enough to give Talib a lucrative long-term deal.We should have traded Mike before the deal when his value would have been at its highest....but this was simply another example of Dummynik trying to validate his draft picks...we saw it with Michael Clayton , Bowers , etc, et.....
I'm not writing him off yet.. I just hope this isn't going to be an issue with this regime. He might just need to get away from his knucklehead friends that don't have as much to lose as him.

Your damn right it is. For a 4th round pick he has been amazing.

The fact is he's a lifetime quitter who doesn't do anything that our #1 WR doesn't do. Any offensive scheme we run would benefit more from a #2 WR with complementary skills (like route running and speed). MW had value to other teams and trading him rather than extending him made the most sense for the future of the team.

Talib at 1 year for $4,860,000 to see how he does. Mike William's seems like a bargain now at $1,800,000 for the same deal with a 1 year trial. Then you keep him, cut him, or restructure him.
Keep Williams 1 more year. This is no different from K2, Manziel, and Gronk partying it up as young adults. When we get a consistent threat at QB Williams will be just fine.
