Winston finished the 2014 season with 25 TDs and 18 ints. Many people have mentioned their concern with the alarming number of ints. 18 is a lot, but the point where the amount of ints becomes a major concern is relative to a number of factors. Lets first acknowledge this before I take a deeper look into Winston 25TD/18ints.If player-A threw 5 ints for the season and player-B threw 15, obviously without any other variables added, player-A is probably a better QB or at least makes better decisions whereas player-B is careless with the ball. Now lets add the TD variable. Player-A threw 10 TDs and 5 ints, where as player B threw 50TDs and 15ints. All of the sudden player-A is nothing to speak of and player-B had a fantastic season. Nobody is concerned about the ints player-B has thrown, if anything they say he gets a little too confident at times and forces a few but its not really a big deal..Hes a gunslinger. Now that TD variable added to Winston doesnt necessarily help his case against his alarming 18 ints. But I believe there are other variables that people are missing. Ill go over them below game by game.Game 1: FSU vs Oklahoma State - Winston: 1TD/2ints. He is already in the hole here. More ints than TDs. would those same people be concerned? His TD to int ratio isnt looking great here. Now lets add in the other variables.FSU vs Oklahoma State - Winston: 370 yards passing; FSU: 37 points.Woah! his TD-int ratio didnt look so great but you mean to tell me with only 1 TD FSU scored 37 points and Winston threw for 370 yards? Looks can be decieving in football when viewing just one stat line. Disagree if you want, but with 370 yards over 60% completion, and 37 total points for FSU Winston could have easily had 2, ,3 maybe even 4 TDs here. (he did rush one himself.) If he had two more passing TDs here the TD-int ratio goes from a poor 1-2 respectable 3-2 with 370 passing. Now you get the point of these variables people are missing when citing winston high number of ints this season, I will save you and myself the commentary after each game and just paste the relative numbers below.Game 2: FSU vs Citadel - Winston: 2 TDs 0ints, 256 yards passing, 81% completions, FSU - 37 points (skipping Clemson)Game 3: FSU vs NC State - Winston: 4 TDs, 2 ints, 365 yards passing, 68% completion (damn!)FSU - 56 pointsGame 4: FSU vs Wake Forest - Winston: 1 TD 1int, 297 yards passing, 59%, 1 rushing TDFSU - 43 points (43 points, 1 passing TD. let that sink in...)Game 5: FSU vs Syracuse - Winston: 3 TDs, 0ints, 317 yards passing, 83% (damn!)FSU - 38 pointsGame 6: FSU vs Notre Dame - Winston: 2 TDs, 1int, 273 yards passing, 74%FSU - 31 pointsGame 7: FSU vs Louisville - Winston: 3TDs, 3ints, 401 yards passing (damn!) 52% (sloppy- cant defend the TD-int on this one)FSU - 42 pointsgame 8: FSU vs Virginia - Winston: 1 TD, 2int, 261 yards passing, 63%FSU - 34 points (wish our QB could set us up for 34 points without even having to get more than 1 TD)Game 9: FSU vs Miami - Winston: 1TD, 1int, 304 yards passing, 59%FSU - 30 pointsGame 10: FSU vs Boston College - Winston: 1TD, 1int, 281 yards passing, 68%FSU - 20 points (finally one where Winstons stats correlate accurately with what youd expect the score to be.)Game 11: FSU vs Florida - Winston: 2 TDs, 4ints (ouch), 125 yards passing, 50%FSU - 24 points (Winstons worse game in college for sure)Game 12: FSU vs GA Tech - Winston: 3TDs, 0ints, 309 yards passing, 70%FSU - 37 pointsand finally FSU vs Oregon. Everyone here watched it. 1 TD, 1int, 348 yards passing, FSU got manhandled but Winston still looked pretty good.Summary: That for all you non Winston haters who are still concerned about the ints. Yes the 18 is not a good number and he forced some balls like player-B in my example, but he also had some young WRs messing up routes. in the end though the 25-18 TD-int ratio is not really what it seems. Could have easily been 35-18 or 38-18 which Im sure would be less of a concern for you.
