Is Mike Glennon about to be available again for Buccaneers?

The mayhem of NFL free agency is still officially several weeks away, but already we are seeing names and news brought up. And with talk in Chicago that the Bears are likely to quickly part with former Bucs backup QB Mike Glennon, there may be mutual interest from his former team and him in a reunion.

Since Ryan Pace took over the Bears three years ago, the team has given out the fourth-most guaranteed money in the NFL and has 14 wins to show for it.
As Dickerson lays out, the Bears have laid out $16 million guaranteed for the portion of the one year that Glennon started in Chicago, and Glennon is due a $2.5 million in a roster bonus coming up that the Bears have no intention of paying.
Now, could Chicago and Glennon re-structure his deal to keep him as the backup in the Windy City to Mitchell Trubisky, who is clearly the starter, moving forward? Sure, they could.
Would Glennon be willing to do that? Unknown.
Here’s what we do know: the Bucs were prepared last year to make Glennon the highest paid backup in the NFL, to be their “insurance” behind Jameis Winston. You cannot fault him for turning them down, as he ultimately cashed in with the lucrative deal to go to Chicago, as the starter.
Then came the draft and the Bears took Trubisky with the second pick.
Glennon was 5-13 with 30 TDs and 15 INTs in four seasons in Tampa Bay. None of that or his brief tenure at the helm of the Bears, is going to excite any Bucs fans.
But, the fact that Glennon is familiar with Dirk Koetter’s system after being in it for two seasons (2015-16), and the Bucs have to make a decision about bringing back Ryan Fitzpatrick who will turn 36 during the season, makes his possible availability intriguing.
And most importantly, Koetter and GM Jason Licht believed in and presumably still believe in Glennon’s ability to help, if needed.
And remember, he’s there as “insurance.” And, the Buccaneers needed the insurance last year when Winston missed significant parts or all of five games with a shoulder injury in 2017.
So, if Glennon is available come March? Look for the Bucs to be “front and center” trying to bring him back.
