Bucs Insider Fantasy Outlook 2017: Wide Receiver

WR Mike Evans

[table id=30 /]

Current ADP: 1.09 (9th pick of the 1st round, 9th overall)

Evans is the big weapon to get from the Tampa bay Buccaneers, but it will certainly come at a cost.

Evans finished as the No. 1 wide receiver in all of fantasy football in standard league formats due to his incredibly high target rate – NFL-most 175 targets in 2016. He won’t get that again, so now the question becomes: Will you be drafting him because of last year’s numbers that won’t repeat?

I think Evans is still going to have plenty of production in the offense, and I think he’ll hit double digit touchdowns again, unlike ESPN’s projections seen above. In a mock draft I did recently, I drafted Evans at No. 5 overall to see what my team was like. It wasn’t as good as I wanted it to be. I think his average draft position is pretty spot on at the end of the first round. I wouldn’t take him over a top tier running back, or Antonio Brown or Julio Jones, just because Tampa Bay’s offense will no longer need to force feed him at the volume they previously did, even if he is still the primary option.

However, he’s still a Top 5 receiver in football.

WR DeSean Jackson

[table id=31 /]

Current ADP: 8.01 (1st pick of the 8th round, 84th overall)

Where I think over drafting Mike Evans would not be the correct move, over drafting deSean Jackson at his current ADP would be good, in my book.

Right now Jackson is getting drafted near wide receivers like Jeremy Maclin, Pierre Garcon, and DeVante Parker. I’d take Jackson over all of them in standard formats, and I’d especially take him higher in PPR formats.

People think of Jackson as the home run hitter for the Buccaneers’ offense, and he certainly will be, but that’s not all he will be. From watching all the offseason practices, I can tell you that they want to incorporate getting the ball in Jackson’s hands in any way they can. That can come on short routes, slant routes, WR reverses; anything, really. I think Jackson could stand to go one, maybe even two rounds higher than he is right now because of how creative I think the offense will be to get him the ball, not just on big throws down the field.

WR Chris Godwin

[table id=32 /]

Current ADP: N/A

It’s hard to have three fantasy relevant wide receivers on the same roster minus having a quarterback who throws for 40 touchdowns.

Godwin was a great draft pick by the Buccaneers, and in terms of winning game in real life, I think he’ll be a worth-while piece, even in his first year. However, I don’t think he’s going to get enough touches per week to generate starting potential in a lineup – there are just too many receivers to go around, and that’s without mentioning the tight ends.

Right now Godwin doesn’t have an average draft position because he’s not drafted very often. If it’s a deep league where you can stash him, maybe. But, other than that, he’s not a guy you can draft.

The encouraging part about Godwin, however, is that at Penn State he was a very good route runner on a variety of different routes. If Jackson or Evans goes down, Godwin would be a well above average potential fill-in player. He might be more of a high priority waiver player, though.

WR Adam Humphries

[table id=33 /]

Current ADP: N/A

Humphries had a career year last year with Vincent Jackson and Austin Seferian-Jenkins not producing for various reasons.

In camp this offseason, Humphries was back to doing what he did best – getting open and catching passes. He’s going to be a factor for this offense as a slot receiver, but unfortunately for fantasy owners, that will come at more of an annoyance rather than a player you can start. Humphries is a fantasy vulture for receivers.
