The Bucs cleared some much needed salary cap room by restructuring the final year of Tom Brady’s contract. The Boston Globe’s Ben Volin posted the contract details on Twitter on Tuesday.

Brady was set to earn a $19.5 million base salary in 2022, which was the final year of the one-year contract extension he signed after winning Super Bowl LV in 2020. He is now set to make $1.12 million in base salary and receive a $13.88 million roster bonus. Tampa Bay added four voidable years to spread out the $13.88 million roster bonus hit.

Brady also has $4.5 million in incentives and his new cap number in 2022 is $13.771 million. As part of the restructure, Brady and the Bucs agreed to Tampa Bay not having the ability to use the franchise or transition tag on him in 2023. In case Brady wants to play a 24th NFL season at age 45/46, he’ll have the freedom to do so elsewhere if he wants.

Brady will account for $35.104 million in dead salary cap room next year, which is a gigantic number. But the Bucs can reduce it to $10.776 million in 2023 by posting it after June 1. That would help Tampa Bay have more cap space next year. The team would then have an unavoidable – but more manageable – $24.328 million cap hit for the 2024 season.
