Bucs wide receiver Chris Godwin appeared on a Zoom conference call with Bucs beat reporters on Tuesday, shrugging off a big hit he took to the head in the fourth quarter of Tampa Bay’s 34-23 loss at New Orleans, but didn’t feel well on Wednesday and entered the concussion protocol, according to head coach Bruce Arians.

Godwin missed practice on Wednesday, and according to Dr. David Chao, a former NFL head doctor with the San Diego Chargers for 17 years, orthopedic surgeon and a sports medical analyst for Sirius XM, Fox Sports Radio and Outkick.com, that’s not a good sign. In fact, Godwin’s delayed symptoms could mean he’ll miss Sunday’s game against Carolina – and possibly more action in the weeks to come.

In a recent article titled Bucs’ Chris Godwin To Miss Week 2 Home Opener Vs. Panthers, Maybe More on Outkick.com, Dr. Chao wrote:

“When there are delayed onset symptoms, it means the clearance to return to play will be delayed as well. The league protocol calls for a 5 step return to play protocol and there is no way anyone who has late symptoms on Wednesday can be cleared by the independent neuro by Sunday. The only slim hope is if it is determined that Godwin never had head injury symptoms at all but was placed in the protocol as an extreme precaution.”

Dr. Chao added:

“In my NFL experience, I have seen players placed in the protocol on game day and then found not to have a concussion, but it would be very unusual for a player placed into the protocol three days after the game to be deemed fine. Also, consider that late developing symptoms often are associated with multi-week absences before clearance.”

Dr. Chao, who is not affiliated with the Bucs organization, admits in the Outkick.com article that he hopes he is wrong about Godwin’s condition, and that sentiment is undoubtedly shared by Godwin, the team, and the Tampa Bay fan base.

Godwin led the Bucs with six catches for 79 yards last Sunday and drew a 3-yard unnecessary roughness penalty on safety D.J. Swearinger after hauling in a 9-yard catch on a pass from Tom Brady to convert a fourth-and-7 at the Saints’ 5-yard line. Mike Evans would score a 2-yard touchdown on the next play.

Here is video footage of the Swearinger hit on Godwin.

Scotty Miller, who had a career-high five catches for 73 yards and one carry for six yards, would start at wide receiver for Tampa Bay if Godwin can’t play on Sunday against Carolina.

It’s bizarre that a physician would give such a specific diagnosis regarding someone he has not examined. He may miss this Sunday’s game or he may be out this week, a few weeks or the rest of the year, but there is no way to know until his physician has evaluated his condition..

Not good news. I think Brady will do okay without Godwin, but we all want Chris back on the field. Brady has done more with far less of a receiving group.

Swearinger is a dirty player on a dirty team. Starting to look like another Bucs disappointing season no matter who is at helm for QB. All same issues that plagued this team for years still present on Sunday. Now Godwin and Evans both aren’t right. Not good at all. They somehow manage to F**k up Panthers game and start 0-2 would not be good at all for playoffs let alone Super Bowl.

That was not a dirty hit. It was just a hit.

Expect that to happen when you catch a ball over the middle near the goal line on a drag route.

Our safety crushed Michael Thomas on a similar play near the goal line earlier in the game. Also not cheap, just part of the game.

Scotty Miller is a threat. And also might force Arians to use the 3 TE set more which is Brady’s bread and butter. But regardless, we need Godwin to come back sooner than later.

Agreed! Miller and TB have already connected. Miller will be huge this season. The league will know his name shortly if they don’t already.

If anyone can turn lemons into lemonade (as long as Arians doesn’t interfere) its Brady with the Bucs TEs and Scotty Miller and Mike Evans. Plus utilizing McCoy and Fournette as pass-catching backs. For once, I’m not *too* worried if Godwin misses a game or 2. As long as the offense gels, name another team with this many weapons. I’ll wait.

Ain’t one. Period. And yes, we can afford a game or two without Godwin while the schedule cooperates. Later on, not so much.

I like the 3 TE idea. Big bodies in the middle opening up field for speedy WR or TE and helping open lanes for Fournette.

When he was coming off the field after being hit he had a little bit of a wobble.
He will probably be out at least this game and maybe the next one.

If the NFLwants to stop concussive helmet hits then they should hold the defensive players accountable, and fine them the same number of games the player with the concussion is out. So Swearinger should be told he doesn’t play till Godwin is cleared. This will end the vicious hits tomorrow.

Not a dirty hit. Injuries are part of a collision sport. Instead of blaming the hit, maybe blame the play design and QB throw that lead him into a Saints sandwich. Gronk got blasted on a similar play in the first half and I was shocked he didn’t have a broken leg.

That said, I hope Godwin gets well soon.

Teams throw over the middle all the time now because of the rule changes. ArtPenn, I said the same thing yesterday. What is even worse is that Swearinger is a second stringer and is known for his cheap shots. Does anyone remember the Saints and Bountygate.

I work in the medical field too, I change bedpans. What a ridiculous thing to say. Almost as foolish as giving a “medical evaluation,” without seeing the patient. This quack isn’t associated with any NFL organization. This is almost as stupid as placing a doctor with no related experience as a lead consultant to your Virus Task Force because he was a paid quack on a highly prejudicial news channel who believes in herd immunity. Of course it would only cost a couple million lives to reach that level but as long as it isn’t yours, what the heck. Rate… Read more »

You’re right, he can’t help it. I guess someone who empties bedpans for a living (assuming Dr.D isn’t kidding) and spends his day walking around with a mini cesspool would have a bit of an attitude.

Really? Can we leave the political crap off of here? You realize Sweden, who went for the herd immunity, has had a whopping 52 deaths in the last 30 days. That would be like Florida only having 104 deaths in that same time period. They have a total of 5,864 deaths, which would be like Florida having 11,728. Florida is one of the lower deaths per capita states (though certainly higher than a few months ago). Herd immunity has long been known as real thing for a long time. It’s only been politicized recently. Rate this item:Thumb UpThumb DownSubmit Rating00… Read more »

Herd immunity takes 5 or more years to develop. Herd immunity is furthered by vaccinations. Herd immunity doesn’t work on many afflictions and clearly hasn’t worked on Covid-19.

Stop spreading dumb misrepresented information about Sweden, which has universal healthcare, no pro sports, nor large numbers of travelers from outside the country.

Umm, yeah, no, it doesn’t. I don’t rely on S**t sources like Wikipedia. You are flat out wrong.

FYI, here’s a chart on Sweden. I can actually look at REAL data, and I’m getting quite fed up with you people who don’t use real data and instead use politicized sources. I don’t care who you listen to or plan to vote for.

Did you even look at that info you linked???? It proves my point precisely!

Sweden banned travel into their country early. Their lead scientist said their death rate was not due to “herd immunity”. They have the 5th highest mortality rate in Europe. He said masks, distancing, No large gatherings, washing hands and available healthcare to all helped keep infections low.
