Bucs safety Antoine Winfield Jr had himself a game in Sunday’s 19-17 win against the Patriots. The second-year safety finished the contest tied for the team lead with seven total tackles. He added a pass deflection to go along with two turnovers for the Bucs, which both came at key points in the game.

Winfield Jr’s first turnover, an interception, came on a Ross Cockrell tipped pass down the field.

Linebacker Devin White forced the errant throw with pressure on rookie quarterback Mac Jones. But Winfield showed great awareness to track the ball and make the play. He was tackled immediately on the return for zero yards. Unfortunately the Bucs wouldn’t be able to capitalize on the turnover. Brady led Tampa Bay into field goal range, but Ryan Succop missed a 36-yarder wide right.

Winfield Jr’s second turnover occurred in the form of a forced fumble.

A big hit by Winfield on Patriots running back J.J Taylor jarred the ball loose in the flat. Newly signed cornerback Richard Sherman scooped up the ball, thwarting a likely scoring drive for the Patriots. Again the Bucs couldn’t capitalize on the turnover, going three-and-out. But Winfield’s two turnovers came when the Patriots were starting to gain momentum with promising drives.

Unfortunately Winfield’s night ended early. Late in the fourth quarter he entered concussion protocol and did not return. After the game, head coach Bruce Arians did not have an update on the young safety.

In his rookie season, Winfield burst onto the scene. As a Week 1 starter, Winfield logged 94 tackles, one for a loss, four QB hits, three sacks, an interception and two forced fumbles. The second round pick capped off a strong year in the playoffs with 18 tackles, two tackles-for-loss, an interception and a forced fumble. The forced fumble against the Saints came in a critical moment and turned the tide of the game. Winfield missed the NFC Championship game with an ankle injury, but returned for the Super Bowl, catching a key interception off Patrick Mahomes.

Hopefully, Winfield’s absence from the field is a brief one. With the Bucs down three starting cornerbacks, they can’t afford more injuries at safety too.

Tampa Bay hosts Miami in Week 5 at Raymond James Stadium.

I just can’t believe how hard the secondary has been hit with injuries. Usually it’s spread throughout the whole roster but so far most of the injuries has been to the secondary. I hope we get Dean and SMB back soon as I believe Davis will be out awhile. He’s been dealing with an injuries groin for awhile but last night it looked so bad and I have to ask knowing how hard the secondary had been hit with injuries why the hell was Davis playing special teams? That was a risk not worth taking in my mind. To put… Read more »
