Bucs offensive tackle Tristan Wirfs may have missed his first action in the NFL this past season, but don’t expect him to miss much more time. According to Bucs GM Jason Licht, the ankle injury that ended Wirfs’ season did not require surgery this offseason. Wirfs originally hurt his ankle in the first quarter of the Bucs’ Wild Card victory over the Eagles. The All-Pro tackle missed the following game against the Rams due to the injury.
Following the season, The Athletic’s Jeff Howe reported that Wirfs needed surgery to repair two torn ankle ligaments. Turns out, the second-year lineman is recovering without a procedure.

Wirfs has still never missed a regular season snap in his career. That’s an impressive streak for the first-round pick, who enjoyed Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors this season. Considering the retirement of Ali Marpet and the free agent status of Alex Cappa and Ryan Jensen, Tampa Bay’s OL continuity is in flux. At least the affirmation of Wirfs’ health is one encouraging sign moving forward.
Licht indicated that Wirfs had a chance to play if the Bucs kept winning in the playoffs.
“[His recovery] is going well,” Licht said. “We want to make sure that he’s 100 percent before he gets back out there. I think there would have been a chance if we continued to play in the postseason that he may have been able to play. But we’re gonna be very careful with him. So when he gets out there, he’s fully 100 percent. I expect him to be ready for camp, and maybe before that.”
