The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are currently undefeated at 2-0 during the preseason, but those two wins haven’t come without some casualties.

To start on a good note, Bucs rookie cornerback Carlton Davis was back at practice after missing practice and the game last week in Nashville. Davis was plugged right back in with the first-team defense starting opposite Brent Grimes.

But, as you’ll see is the theme today on defense, there was more bad new to report than good.

Bucs rookie defensive tackle Vita Vea was still not practicing. This is the beginning of his third week of missed time after going down with a calf injury early in camp. It looks like Vea might not get any preseason action.

In addition to that, safety Jordan Whitehead and cornerback De’Vante Harris were both wearing non-contact black jerseys. It was good to see them at least out there and practicing, but the non-contact jerseys, even in a practice that wasn’t in full pads, still wasn’t ideal.

After forcing two fumbles in the first half of the game versus the Titans, Bucs rookie cornerback M.J. Stewart left the game with a foot injury. That injury caused him to miss the first practice back at One Buc Place, as he stood next to fellow injured cornerback Vernon Hargreaves on Monday.

To make matters worse, defensive tackle Beau Allen was seen walking off the field and into the training room mid-way through practice. We’re not sure exactly what happened, but defensive end Will Gholston took Allen’s place at defensive tackle for the remainder of the practice.

The Buccaneers missed way too many tackles in their game against the Tennessee Titans this weekend, most notably on the long run by Titans running back Dion Lewis, which got the better of Bucs linebacker Kwon Alexander, and the missed tackles/bad angle by the Bucs linebackers and safety Justin Evans on the long touchdown screen pass to Titans wide receiver Taywan Taylor.

As a result, they were spending some extra time lining up tackles today while just in shell pads.

The Bucs will be back at practice tomorrow bright and early and we’ll hopefully have a more positive injury update for you then.
