Pewter Report’s Camp Diary series is back for the Bucs’ 2026 training camp in a new format with video interviews in addition to partial transcriptions.

This year’s Pewter Report Camp Diary participants are undrafted free agent quarterback Jalon Daniels, who will represent Tampa Bay’s offense and the rookie class, as well as outside linebacker David Walker, who represents the veterans and the defensive side of the ball.

QB Jalon Daniels played in 49 games over six years at the University of Kansas where he completed 61.5% of his passes for 9,282 yards with 67 touchdowns and 31 interceptions. His best season came last year when he passed for a career-high 22 touchdowns with just seven interceptions in addition to rushing for over 400 yards and four touchdowns.

The Bucs love his charisma, energy and leadership ability as much as his strong arm and mobility outside of the pocket. He was a priority free agent signing after the draft after making an incredible first impression when he visited Tampa Bay on an official 30 visit in April.

Jalon Daniels Camp Diary: Bucs Ready To Go Make Plays In NY

The following is an excerpt from Scott Reynolds’ exclusive second training camp interview with QB Jalon Daniels. For the rest of the interview, including the TD throw he made to end Sunday’s practice, Ted Hurst and the Bucs’ young wide receivers, OLB David Walker’s tremendous camp and his excitement to face the Jets in a pair of joint practices this week and play in New York in his first NFL preseason game – watch the entire Jalon Daniels Camp Diary episode by clicking here.

Scott Reynolds: What a way to end practice with a touchdown rolling to your right and zipping it in there to Dean Patterson. Tell me about that play.

Jalon Daniels: “It was a great play by Dean, being able to snag it one-handed at that. He just continued to stay with me on the move. I think that’s one thing that we continue to work on every single week is the scramble drill. And that wasn’t the scramble drill – that was the design of the play. I think the main emphasis of the scramble drill is being able to stay with you, and he had his eyes on me, and I was able to find him in the end zone and we were able to score.”

Scott Reynolds: How comfortable are you out here doing this with pads on? This has been the first week with pads on and you have maybe elevated your game a little bit.

Jalon Daniels: “I continue to keep working and continue to keep my head down. At the end of the day, you know there’s always going to be ups and downs of every single thing that you do in life. And I’m someone who likes to stay [positive]. I feel like I’m my worst critic, so even when I am having a ‘good day’ to other people, I feel like those little things that I need to work on is something I harp on the most. I think that’s what’s going to continue to help me be able to keep building.”

Scott Reynolds: The Ted Hurst touchdown was a little reminiscent of Mike Evans there – a big 6-foot-4 receiver going up and over a corner in great, tight coverage. [Jacob] Parrish was right there, but still coming down with that high point catch and making the play in the back of the end zone. What have you seen from Ted Hurst, who also had a huge, leaping play down the sidelines too today?

Jalon Daniels: “I mean Ted is just an all-around ballplayer. Someone who goes out there and is running the routes he needs to run. He has elite ability to be able to create space. And then when he is contested, as you were able to see, he was able to go up there and get the ball. I think he’s going to be able to make a lot of great plays for the Bucs this year.”

Scott Reynolds: Todd Bowles is known for his exotic blitz packages. You’ve now seen those en masse this week, whether it’s blitzing cornerbacks from the slot or the side, blitzing linebackers from everywhere, safeties – we’ve seen [Antoine] Winfield come in. How does that help you as a quarterback to see all of these different looks from blitzes on the regular coming from anywhere – how does that help prepare you for game day?

Jalon Daniels: “It helps you a lot. Like I said earlier, when you’re able to practice certain things and be able to create those habits before a game day, it makes a lot of things a lot easier on game day because you’re able to say that you’ve seen this before. You know exactly what your rules are, what call you’re supposed to make to be able to make sure that everything is running smoothly. And that’s exactly what I love about it.

“I mean, obviously, it’s hell as soon as you are first getting started with all the blitzes coming your way. But the more you are able to work to continue to work on that, the more you are able to be able to know what you need to get to when you see all these pressures coming. It will help you be more prepared for game day.”

Scott Reynolds: You get to suit up in a Tampa Bay Buccaneers uniform next Friday under the lights and go out there – you will probably see a lot of time in the second half. What is that going to be like, and what is your mental process as you’re getting ready to take some of your first NFL snaps?

Jalon Daniels: “First things first – giving honor to my lord and savior, Jesus Christ. I wouldn’t be here in this position without Him. And I think that it’s just going to be one of those dream come true moments. You know when you’re putting on that uniform, being able to go out there. I mean, obviously, I’ve been working with these guys for months. So being able to go out there and finally be able to go to war with those guys – you know, guys you know, you build that trust with those guys inside and outside the locker room.

“I think we’re ready to go. I’m ready to go be able to see a lot of guys go out there and make plays, especially the rookies, the new guys, who just got here. I’m ready to go see a lot of people go out there and make the play. Go Bucs!”
