Just Grillin Pewter Player Of The Week – CB Robert McClain

The Buccaneers didn’t reveal which player – Javien Elliott or newcomer Robert McClain – was going to be starting at nickel cornerback in Sunday’s 2017 season opener against Chicago. An hour and a half before kickoff, Elliott was declared inactive, which meant the start would go to McClain, a six-year NFL veteran, who previously played in Mike Smith’s defense in Atlanta.

The Bucs coaches chose wisely as McClain made quite a splash in his Tampa Bay debut.

In the second quarter with the Bucs up 17-0 over the Bears, McClain stepped in front of the receiver he was defending and intercepted quarterback Mike Glennon and returned the pick 47 yards for a touchdown. That score put the game out of reach at 23-0. The Bucs added a field goal right before halftime as Tampa Bay enjoyed a 26-0 that would ultimately turn into a 29-7 blowout in the team’s first win of the 2017 season.

McClain finished the game with three tackles and his pick-six, which was the first of his NFL career. He now has five interceptions in his NFL career.
