New Bucs wide receiver Julio Jones has still got it.

Tampa Bay’s new weapon put on a show in his first practice in red and pewter. He didn’t drop a ball and made a few spectacular catches on passes from Tom Brady and Blaine Gabbert.

Wearing No. 85, the seven-time Pro Bowler didn’t look like a 33-year old receiver. He showed impressive quickness for such a big target at 6-foot-3, 220 pounds.

“He can still run, you know, he’s a big target and he’s still quick,” Bucs head coach Todd Bowles said. “His first day was pretty good, it’s just a matter of him getting caught up on the scheme.”

Jones needs to learn the playbook, but certainly had the experience to run some of the routes that were called during Thursday’s practice. The Bucs wasted no time throwing him into the mix in 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 sessions.

“I think it’s important for him to get reps, he’s got to get the scheme down, so we throw him in there with everybody else and take a look at him,” Bowles said. “He ran some things, some things obviously we had to keep him out of. But we are pleased with where he is and he’s at right now. We’ve just got to continue to get the mental part of it down.”

Jones signed a one-year, $6 million contract with Tampa Bay on Wednesday. He’ll at least be the No. 4 wide receiver on the team behind starters Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, and newly signed Russell Gage. Jones and Gage played together for three years in Atlanta.

Bucs general manager Jason Licht echoed what Bowles said on Wednesday. The team got so depleted at wide receiver last year the Bucs wanted to stockpile good talented pass-catchers now rather later.

“Well it’s a scenario that we’ve talked about for a while, going back to OTAs,” Licht said. “It made sense to potentially pursue it, it was a thought periodically with his agent all summer. I know Tom and Julio have talked and it just kind of came to fruition in the last couple of days. Really excited to have him, I know he’s super excited to be here. He’s a mature guy, tough guy and competitive guy. He’s just excited to have a chance to win a championship.”

Jones came close to winning a championship with Atlanta in Super Bowl LI in 2016. But the Falcons famously blew a 28-3 lead in the third quarter and lost 34-28 in overtime to the Brady-led Patriots.

Instead of facing Brady, Jones is now teaming up with him in a run for a championship. That quest started off on the right foot for Jones on Thursday in Tampa Bay.
