How much better, if any, will the Buccaneers be in 2019? Las Vegas betting sites think maybe a game, but most local fans feel the team should be considerably better than their previous two 5-11 seasons.

One NFL writer, who came up with a projected 2019 starting lineup on offense and defense, isn’t overly excited. Greg Rosenthal still sees too many holes on the Bucs roster.

“I’m less excited about the 2019 Bucs after performing this exercise. While Bruce Arians could be the perfect match for Jameis Winston, there are too many other potholes dotted throughout the roster to ignore.”

Below is Rosenthal’s projected lineup for Tampa Bay in 2019.

QB: Jameis Winston
RB: Peyton Barber
WR: Mike Evans
WR: Chris Godwin
WR: Breshad Perriman
TE: O.J. Howard
LT: Donovan Smith
LG: Ali Marpet
C: Ryan Jensen
RG: Alex Cappa
RT: Demar Dotson

DE: Gerald McCoy
DT: Vita Vea
DE: Will Gholston
OLB: Carl Nassib
ILB: Devin White
ILB: Lavonte David
OLB: Shaq Barrett
CB: Vernon Hargreaves
CB: Sean Bunting
S: Justin Evans
S: Jordan Whitehead

  1. It is hard to forecast what this team will do. With the massive away schedule (four games away in a row) this year including a trip to England, the hurdles are high for a better record. Not as many playoff teams on the schedule from last year is a benefit. We as fans will find out for real now if the team has any talent or not to do better with a coaching change and a few new defensive players that add to the roster. If it does not improve again this year it could be the end of Jason Licht, that is all I know.

  2. Schedule and roster don’t look promising. Only chance we have is a) Winston turns the corner; b) we avoid the injury bug; c) we get some early wins and build momentum. If any all three of those things don’t happen we are near the top of the draft again.

  3. Hard to project the roster at this point. Key to season will be how well we play in the trenches.

Can the O line open holes for a running game and protect Jamies to keep him healthy and avoid turnovers.
Can the D line stop the run and rush the passer to protect the DB’s.

So far our roster hasn’t improved over last year to do theses things.

  4. AGREE, D White-ILB, only huge significant addition! When look at right side of O-line, Cappa and Doty, both below average, and for u GMC haters, change GMC to Allen, and that doesn’t make team better!!! Obviously, many unknowns at this point to predict, but team ATTITUDE/effort, great coaching, new schemes on O and D, can offer a few added Wins and hope for Bucs fans, BUT then cancel that with terrible schedule, Winston’s regular turnovers, with average O-line and D-Line, NO significant running game, NO game changers on D-line, below average secondary with NO experience and YUP 5-11 looks real again. That’s why Vegas over/under win total at 6.5!!
My question to Bucs fans: Thumbs up for those putting down $$$ on the over 6.5 win total for 2019 Bucs, thumbs down for under 6.5 wins?

  6. Oh hell, lets coach these guys up, put in some new D wrinkles, maybe pick up a OG after final cuts, and play hard one game at a time. Remember, if we can’t figure out what the team will look like once BA gets done with it, I guarantee the rest of the NFC South won’t either. I can’t help but believe there’s some magic surrounding our Buc’s this season.

  7. I am going to level set my expectations for the Bucs in 2019. First let me make an all-encompassing statement by saying that I like what they have done and I like where they are going.

I like the new coaching staff, I like the new defensive scheme, I like the secondary improvements and I love the offensive skills positions. We have a football team. But we are not there yet and we will not get there (playoffs and beyond) until we have the offensive line that allows us to be the offensive tour de force that we are poised to be. With the issues going on with JPP and McCoy coupled with a practically new secondary, it will take both luck and a miracle for the Bucs to go from worst to first.

I have spent the off season watching Jameis Winston highlights for the specific purpose of evaluating guard and tackle play. OT Donavan Smith may become that LT that would allow QB Tom Brady to stand in place, go through his reads and deliver the ball. But to this point, he has not been that blind side protector that provides the QB assurance of time to throw the ball. The Right guard play has not provided a RB the adequate time or space to get out of the backfield. The right tackle play is decent in pass protection, but lacks the downfield push for an effective run game.

Take Byron Leftwich out of the equation. Jameis Winston’s regression or progression will depend primarily on the QB whisperer himself, Bruce Arians. The obvious analogy here is Rome wasn’t built in a day! I acknowledge that ancient wisdom, but before we can become that team and consistently win football games, a lot of things have to fall in place. I am not saying they can’t make the playoffs this year. I hope they do. I am saying that it is not my expectation and I’m not going to set my hair on fire and call for regime change if they don’t.

I do not project win/loss games. I simply see some of the apparent deficiencies that could prevent a winning season. I am not even going to mention the kicking game which the Bucs acknowledge needed to improve by drafting a kicker in the 5th round. Therefore, I expect the Bucs to make substantial defensive improvements this year, but will not maximize offensive effectiveness until the O-Line issues are addressed and improved. Please allow me to come back 1 week before the regular season starts to adjust my perspective. Go Bucs!

  8. Yes..I see major improvements in our coaching staff. That may not be enough though. Every year for us..it seems to come down to the word most Buc fans don’t like talking about…DEFENSE…that thing that won us our 1st and only superbowl. I think we have added secondary speed to our..slow as molasses secondary. I am concerned about Sacks and D. Pressure though. Will Gholston folks..ain’t the answer. Not even close. Despite Winston’s woes, we have scored enough points to win..had we just been able to stop somebody..anybody. That was absolutely past pityful last yr Defensively. Hope we improve. 8-8 for us would be an accomplishment. No excuses about the schedule people. If you are a good team, you can and will win on the road. Get the GMC deal done Licht and find us a DE. Stop making Excuses!

  9. They’re basing all their hopes that Bruce Arians will change Jameis Winston from the quarterback he’s been for 4 years and suddenly he’ll stop throwing interceptions and fumbling something they have not been able to stop for the last 4 years with the assumed departure of Gerald McCoy and the injury of jpp they’re basing their defense around the linebacker who has yet to play one down in the NFL dropped two good receivers and replace them from Cut backups from other teams and you can kind of see the picture and the hope is these new coaches will change a pattern that has lasted for over 10 years with less talented players. The cap problem comes from high percentage of salary going to underperforming players Evans being the only exception. They plan on giving 10.9% of their entire salary to a quarterback rated in the 90s but yet the pewter boys find Hope in their words.

  10. Todd Bowles was made the head coach of the Jets to bring his defensive prowess to the Jets once he installed his defense the defense progressively got worse each year for 4 years he was then fired and ran out of New York the offensive coordinator Leftwich has not been Associated as a coach with a team that had a winning record during his eight games as offensive coordinator for the Cardinals noted his quarterbacks he developed where second and third string only managed to score 108 points in a games whatever happened to the days. When teams like the eagles went and hired Doug Peterson who as an offensive coordinator had the best offense in the league and to their surprise won a Superbowl quickly it seems like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers like the hire coaches that have a history of being at the bottom of the league. Arians recent history in the Cardinals was a disaster and yes when you pay a retired coach he’s been fired when pointing these things out everybody says Buc ass Bob is a negative assshole but I just question the sanity of these moves. When this slow Trainwreck unfolds this season. I will be the only one on this site who predicted it everybody on this site sees a bright rainbow coming in the form of Bruce Arians

  14. The Bucs acknowledge that they are not there yet! Bucs HC Bruce Arians recently spoke on how the uncertainty on the defensive line changes how they plan. Arians acknowledged there is a missing piece and they are trying to find it now.

“It’s easy. When we get to training camp, we will have the guys that we want in there. When I was in Arizona, every year that last week we would always add the missing piece. We’re looking for the missing piece right now. There is somebody out there. John Abraham came in, Dwight Freeney came in, guys that really impacted our defense and Todd [Bowles] did a great job of matching them up. We’re nowhere near where we are going to be in September, so we will just wait and see.”

I wouldn’t be alarmed just yet Buc fans. It seems there is likely more to come. Go Bucs!

For all of those of you wondering how smart Jameis Winston is go to Bucs wire and watch his buddy use a driver to drive a golf ball off the top of Jameis Winston’s head using his head as a golf tee last week at a golf course. 17. Bucs roster did look better with DJAX, Baker, etc and all those FA Licht signed.

But what matters to me is homegrown cre talent and if they have been re-signed. Marpet, D. Smith, M. Evans, C. Brate are all under contract. Winston and OJ Howard if they play their cards right will be re-upped. Name an NFL team with that type of nucleus on either side of the ball? You can’t.

The Cowboys for example have tough decisions to make as they want to keep Dak Prescott and Amari Cooper, but they will have to let some of their o-linemen hit free agency. Then you have E. Elliot as a big question mark. Haven’t even touched the defensive side of the ball for the Cowboys.

  20. Nelson could turn out to be a gem at DE/OLB. Edwards will be the 2nd Safety/Slot Corner and for all we know Dean will be CB #2. Watford will bring experience to the RG spot and be better than Benenoch at least and Dotson can hold down RT better because of it and there is a chance Cappa could take over there as well.

There will be positive surprises on our roster by the time Week 1
Rolls around, Winston has every bit of talent to as he has shown and there is no having to “Fix” him, he just needs to play like he did the last half of the season with even more confidence and Ass Boy can finally stop posting. On top of that there may be a couple more pieces brought in.

Stop trying to predict wins before the lads even come on, just stop it. We all know the weaknesses so let’s focus on the bright spots and support our team.

  22. In my view, the talent on all NFL teams is fairly similar. The biggest difference is injuries that take their toll by weakening the group actually on the field and attitude. The past two seasons, both issues have worked against our favorite team.

Last year we were fielding guys who were literally off the street. Last year you could see the demeanor of the team change with each missed PAT and FG. The defense’s total inability to stop the opponent on third down was demoralizing. Playing from behind made the offense way too predictable which put the O-line and the QB’s in dire straits.

And what is Bruce Arians addressing with his “mind games”? Seems to me he’s working on the team accountability, confidence and attitude. Might work on running the ball in the red zone and using the RB’s as a pass catcher once in a while too.

  24. Bob you not worth responding to and I won’t. Your a Broken record of idiocy.

Roster and what you have on paper doesn’t mean shit. The roster isn’t finished either. That said this a year of huge change. Usually when huge change comes there is a learning curve. We have a winning proven head coach that took 5-11 Cards to winning team his first year. They were a better defense, but not better or more talented offense than the current Bucs! The O line needs to improve and is the biggest issue for this team not Jameis Winston. I’m still skeptical the right side with better coaching can dominate anyone. That said again roster isn’t done and I’m waiting to see.

Bowles knows his shit too and has track record to prove it. Nobody but stupid Bob thinks Bowels isn’t a great D coordinator. Head coach he wasn’t ready like Koetter and he had a shitty team that needed to clean house with Jets. Did Koetter have hard time finding a job? No. If Bucs passed on Bowels he would been grabbed immediately by another team for good reason. Who would been better pick for proven d coordinator? Nobody.

Finally JPP and McCoy. Every team every year at some point will be missing key players. It’s up to coaches to get rest of team to play harder and put them in position to shine. I trust Arians to do just that. So I’m not going to cry and complain and whine like a little bitch. Lol. Yes McCoy is better than Allen, but since Bucs haven’t cut him it’s obvious he will likely stay another year and possibly restructure until they get deeper at DT. JPP will cost us a few sacks while out but it’s obvious most of pressure will come from blitzing now.

Predicting or whining when roster isn’t complete is just stupid IMO. Are they gonna be playoff team this year? Who knows, but they will be competitive and fun to watch again I bet.
They would need little good luck instead of mostly bad luck they have had last 10 years to do so. I’m talking injuries below average not above. This team has had most players or close to most on injured reserve for years!! Why I don’t know. Also schedule looks hard, but every year teams struggle that didn’t year before so it may or may not be a hard schedule. Again until season starts no way to know.

Sit back relax and wait for pre season. Lol.

    Saints-9.5 (actually was 13)
    Panthers-9 (actually was 7)
    Falcons-9 (actually 7)
Bucs-6.5 (actually 5) same prediction again until Bucs play better they will keep throwing out 6-7 wins as baseline. Makes sense I guess. They don’t want to be off or really dig deep.

So how many OL did we draft in the first three rounds? Zero. It can’t get better until we have an OL that allows our skill players to perform up to their potential and dot it consistently. Lite just doesn’t get it. If we improve this year it will be a testament to incredible coaching. God Bless you BA.

  29. There was only 1 team in NFC that allowed more points scored than the 3-4 blitzing Bowles Jets 441 points allowed and that was the Bucs. So put a fired head coach who ran the 2nd worst defense with a team that had the worst defense make sense to fredster.
imagine how this is going to work out for the Bucs. And since Bowles was hired by the Jets to bring his defense to the Jets and it only got worse every year. And somehow this makes sense to the Fredster. AND Fredster compares it to the Falcons hiring a fired head coach who ran the 10th best offense in the NFL not the second-worst like bowles.

  31. Damn and borkdog I have to disagree with you. We improved greatly in our secondary and the most important area Coaching. We were already an extremely talented team last year. With better coaching last year we could have easily been a playoff team. We had a top 5 offense last year with crappy QB situation most of the season. If BA can really improve Winston like he has proven with other QBs in the past. As for our oline I am a little concerned with depth but our starting unit isn’t bad. Better coaching and play calling will
Make our oline look better. I don’t think talent is our biggest concern this year. It is going to be how quickly we can adapt to the new systems and schemes. If we can adapt quickly we will be extreamly competitive this year.
