Each week I’ll be taking a closer look at the snap count distribution for the Bucs offense and defense, assessing what we can learn from who played the most and who played the least on game day.

Here’s a look at which Bucs played the most and the least in the team’s 34-3 preseason loss to the Tennessee Titans.

Preseason Game 2 Bucs-Titans Offensive Snap Counts

In their battle for the ninth OL spot, Brad Seaton and Nick Leverett were the only two players to go the distance. Both seemed to put solid performances on tape, although a re-watch will provide more answers. Leverett’s snap speed was an issue all night, but he only put the ball on the ground once. Not bad for a guy who is really a guard, played left tackle last week and was an emergency center for Saturday’s game.

Codey McElroy leading the way for tight ends with 35 snaps was a telling number considering his competition with Tanner Hudson for a roster spot. It’s also telling that despite just 17 snaps, Hudson caught six of seven targets for 74 yards, while McElroy’s only target went off his hands for an interception. It was a diving effort on a throw that wasn’t great, but McElroy didn’t make the most of his opportunity either.

Probably not a great look for TE Jerell Adams that he played just three snaps. He could be released soon.

At wide receiver, Jaydon Mickens appears to be mired in a group with Cyril Grayson and T.J. Simmons. Grayson had a strong night with four catches for 57 yards, keeping him ahead of Simmons. Of the five players likely to be released by Tuesday’s deadline, Simmons will be high on the list.

In the battle for QB3, there were no winners. Both Kyle Trask and Ryan Griffin played poorly, but the former received twice the snaps. It will be interesting to see which quarterback gets more opportunity next Saturday against the Texans.

Preseason Game 2 Bucs-Titans Defensive Snap Counts

Bruce Arians’ love for Dee Delaney isn’t just lip service. The head coach has praised Delaney by name three separate times, and gave him ample opportunity to prove himself on Saturday night. Delaney wasn’t bad, but Antonio Hamilton has put more on tape. It’s clear that the battle for the fifth and perhaps sixth cornerback spots are down to Hamilton, Delaney and Herb Miller.

In fact, the third team defensive backfield looks like a near lock to not make the roster. Cornerbacks Chris Wilcox and Nate Brooks gave up touchdowns on Saturday, and safeties Chris Cooper and Lawrence White don’t have the range to make an NFL roster. All four received 28 snaps to make an impact, and all four disappointed.

With Cam Gill out, the competition at outside linebacker has dried up. Anthony Nelson will make the final roster, while Elijah Ponder and Quinton Bell battle for a Bucs practice squad spot. Perhaps both will make the squad. Ponder has been better than Bell in practice and in preseason games. He made two consecutive short-yardage snaps in the red zone to keep the Titans out of the end zone.

While decisions at cornerback, safety and edge defender become more clear, linebacker is still a mess. Neither K.J. Britt nor Joe Jones has impressed, while Grant Stuard flashed a little on Saturday. All three have contributed heavily on special teams, but no one has emerged as a clear winner.

At defensive tackle, the Bucs have the opposite issue. Per Arians, Defensive end Pat O’Connor made the roster with 23 snaps of brilliance on Saturday. Defensive tackle Khalil Davis can’t be far behind after a strong summer. That leaves Jeremiah Ledbetter on the outside looking in, despite playing well this summer in camp. Ledbetter should be a practice squad lock, as he’s clearly ahead of Benning Potoa’e and Kobe Smith.
