Much of the Bucs’ 2019 season has been centered around what Tampa Bay will decide for the future of quarterback Jameis Winston. On the last year of his contract, the Bucs have to decide whether to re-sign him, give Winston a franchise tag, or let him walk at the end of the season.

Per a report from Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, we have at least one part of the question answered, as Rapoport says the Bucs are expected to bring back Winston in 2020.

Whether the Bucs decide to give Winston the franchise tag or sign him to a long-term deal remains to seem. If Winston were to get a contract, he’d be the first Bucs quarterback to receive a second contract in franchise history.

Winston has had flashes of ups and downs during the year, as he’s first in the NFL in passing yards with 4,573 and second in the league with 30 touchdowns, but also leads the league with 24 interceptions. Winston has been hot as of late, throwing for 914 yards and eight touchdowns over the last two games.

  1. I was against drafting him, but feel this the right decision. He appears to have cleaned up the off-field issues and his raw talent is impossible to ignore. The alternatives are bleak. With some additions on the offensive line, at safety and a veteran at cornerback for depth, this team is built to win now. Not a time to start over at the most important decision in football.

  2. Buddah I agree. Winston may turn the ball over, but his talent is undeniable. We need a run game we can lean on and that alone will help lower the turnovers. Winston will throw 4 5000 this year and will throw between 35-40 tds. I’ve been high and low on jameis but i believe with a bit more help along the offensive line and another season with Arians, Tampa will turn the corner.

  3. I’ve gone back and forth on Winston this season. If you asked me at the midway point of the season whether we should bring him back next year, my answer was no. At this point I am inclined to say yes, bring him back. His game has improved and the team is surging.

The article I read here on PR about Carson Palmer throwing a lot of INTs in his first season under Bruce Arians also got me thinking. This offense is risky and it’s reasonable to assume a QB playing in this offense will throw more INTs than in a typical offense. That plus the fact Carson Palmer cleaned-up the INTs in later seasons has me thinking Winston is a far better option than starting over with a young talent or trying to revive some other veteran’s career.

  6. I never thought I would say it, but Winston has to be brought back. But Bucs owe it to him to get a dependable Offensive line. We need a complementary running game, or eventually, defenses will key on our passing game and stop us. Bucs need to commit to OTs and Gs in the offseason in the draft and free agency. It feels good to be talking about the Bucs as a competitive team again. It hasn’t been easy being a die-hard Bucs fan.

  8. Winston has been better. He will get another year. With the CBA expiring, Rappaport believes the Bucs will use both the franchise and transition tags on Winston and Barrett, but who gets the franchise tag was his question.

I would have strongly argued that the Bucs won’t use either tag. The Bucs typically do not use it since it pisses players off, but with the CBA changing, who knows?

    • Barrett is the one that I hope they strongly pursue. Is he a one year wonder? Idk. But I do know that without him our defense would be bottom of the league.

  9. Bringing him back is the right call, however drafting a QB in the early rounds is a must. He needs to have competition behind him that’ll push him and we also need a better backup option that Ryan Griffin. OL should be the primary concern in the draft. For most of the season he’s been under duress but when given the time Winston has shown he can pick a defense apart.
I’m saying all this as someone who didn’t really want Winston back at all. I wanted us to go a different route but he has grown on me and the idea of next year being an improvement and the type of year he could have has me excited.

    • So I may have to amend my statement. 3 interceptions in the first half? He seems to not perform well against good teams

      • Without Evan orGodwin in the line up to make acrobatic catches he’s simply sub par at best his receivers fighting for the constant hell marry is the only way he’s been able to make the stats he’s put up. Take away Godwin and we’re 3 and 11

  10. Well, we had “Bad Winston” today. I just do not see him changing. Maybe sign him to another year and draft a QB first round.

  12. Come on this has to be some kind of joke. What has he ever done to suggest he needs to play? He throws late on every pass and he has never been that accurate.

  13. We have begun to refer to Winston as the “Cardiac Kid” in my family. On his good days he can caused cardiac arrest and on his bad days even more so. I suppose I will need to double up on my blood pressure medicine before next season.

  14. Winston is like that girl you dated that was great to party with but you should never marry.

Slapping a Franchise or Transition tag on him is like going on one more date, hoping she will turn into something you can bring home to meet your parents.

  17. This decision could come down to the Altanta game. Another extreme game like recent games could swing the decision. If he had Evans or Goodwin, then I think Jameis wins the Texan game. They are going to quite bit cap room potential, but many free agents. These recent wins have greatly weakened their draft position, so the possibility of drafting a rookie QB seems remote. The Buccaneers would have to make a major deal to get better draft position. Getting a better offensive line seems more reasonable. Maybe a good backup QB would provide Jamies some motivation.

  19. Not sold on Shaq he at the top or near it in sacks. On a bad defense with a worse pass defense. This could be the best year of his career ever. I don’t think he is 12 sack a year guy for the rest of his career. Some thing is not right about one player having some many sacks on an awful pass defense. Without him this year our pass defense is last, which we are too close to with him if not last with him. plus that guy in Atl. always kills us. What is it? coaching? chemistry? Kinda reminds me when Keyshauwn had over 100 catches & only 1 TD. nice but could look a lot nicer. I don’t see 16+ million value. The sack numbers & the impact on the team does not add up. Is he the product of more chances because the other teams game plan is to throw the ball. That money could be used in other ways.
