Mike Freeman, an NFL columnist for Bleacher Report, reported on Friday that several front-office sources had informed him that the Titans and Bucs are expected to “reset their sights” at quarterback, possibly spelling an end to Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota’s tenure with the teams that drafted them first and second overall in 2015.

Winston’s potential as a franchise quarterback, now more than ever in his fifth year, has come under scrutiny following a five-interception, six-turnover game against the Carolina Panthers in Week 6, while things have hit a similar spiral for Mariota in Tennessee.

Also in Week 6, Mariota himself was benched in favor of backup quarterback Ryan Tannehill en route to a 16-0 shutout at the hands of the now 2-5 Denver Broncos.

    • Bigger question, do you pull the trigger now and start Gabbert or Griffin or let him play out the string? If we’re moving on, it suggests the season is lost and we’re, again. waiting for next year. I was hoping to make past mid-season before I started looking forward to the draft.

  2. I believe it’s the end for MM in Tenn, but don’t think the Bucs will move on from Winston unless they move on from the bigger failure Jason Licht. How can a GM survive five out of six losing seasons, three head coaches, and blowing the #1 pick on a QB? I’ll tell you how, because ownership is more clueless then the dummy they hired to run the team. I think if Jameis goes, Licht needs to be the first out the door. That won’t happen until the Glazers come to their senses, and I don’t see that happening either.

    • I agree with the Glazers are more than clueless, I do believe the reason they keep Jason Licht is
      1. Glazers take some of the responsibility for the mistakes they force on Jason.
      2. He allows Bryon Glazer to make the big decisions, the win killing decisions and replacing him would risk the chance of exposure to their involvement.
      3. No other GM would allow owners to make such stupid moves and take the blame.
Jason has been around football too long to make these choices on his own, he is bowing to the Special Gym champion owners of this team.

      • Only would add number 4 – Glazers wanted a big name coach and Licht said he could deliver Arians as evidenced by a) constant chatter/support from Arians about Licht; b) extension given to Licht for the delivery. Question will be is how long BA will be here now that he has to find/groom a new QB and an apparent miscalculation from afar as to the amount of talent on the team. They are still tied together – wonder is Licht’s contract has an out if BA leaves they have a buy-out for the GM.

  8. Anything is possible, but when your whole right side of offensive line is missing what did you think was going to happen to Winston? I have never been impressed with our Oline historically. The QB makes the big bucks so fairly or not he gets the blame. However, Evan’s is living of raw talent, is a terrible route runner, gives up on the ball, and doesn’t maximize his height by grabbing the ball at high point.
Spend on Oline and light a fire under Evans. Then maybe Winston would look like a franchise QB. To expect greatness when there is no protection or a # 1 reciever that will fight for the ball is living in fantasy world.

Assuming Jameis has more downs than ups for the rest of the season and they do move on, I dont see a trade for a QB. Plus who is out there to be traded after this season? Flacco cause they drafted Locke? Foles cause of Minshew mania? Doubtful. Bridgewater? Nah. Seems like it would be in the draft where the QB is addressed but does BA want to groom a rookie? Doubtful. • BOB’ from all accounts, the players have respect for Coach Locust. Also, Jameis wasn’t “resigned”, they picked up his fifth-year option. Difference there being that it was signed by both sides on the rookie deal and resigning someone means there’s a new contract. Oh, almost forgot to mention…… Buc brass did not “drop seven starters”. They dropped two. McCoy and D-Jax. The rest just weren’t given new contracts. I would be missing out if this one didn’t come off my finger tips, too….. Humphries was not a starter. AND, if we wanna get overly technical, Jackson wasn’t “dumped either, he was traded. Maybe if we are gonna call someone out for not wanting to win, we can do so factually.
Of course the Glazers want to win. Winning sells tickets, tickets lead to concessiob and vendor sales. Winning sells merchandise. The Glazers own the franchise to make money, winning = more money.

I think the real problem is the GM and the problem is the owners don’t think so. I wish they would sell this team to somebody else who cares about a Tampa Bay area.

Granted he has had more than his share of bad games, but like I said missed game winning field goals, multiple untimely penalties, lousy tackling, inconsistent O-line play, a continual parade of new coaches and coordinators and now a new scheme are team failures. It’s easy to load it all on his shoulders but the guy has skill sets that on the right team would result in a winner. Granted we “Gave him a Chance,” what we didn’t give him was a team to succeed with.

An NFL QB cannot throw for 300 yards in an NFL game if his Offensive Line sucks as bad as some keep suggesting as to why Jameis cannot produce wins! Yes, our O-Line is bad. But the problem lies within the Offensive play calling and what Jameis does with the ball when he actually has sufficient time to throw the ball!

  32. as up & down a winston has been QB has been the least of this woeful franchise’s problems since he’s been in the NFL… until the bad roster decisions, bad coaching, & bad kicking is fixed this team isn’t going anywhere… with the new regime coaching & kicking is not fixed but has improved … unfortunately the guy in charge of the roster is still here…the oline is still suspect, still no pass rush and the defense is still giving up almost 30 per game but a new QB will fix all of this overnight #GoBucs!!

    • Hey Fredster. These rumors are like white noise and bad for the Team. BA will get barraged with questions and surely will affect the Team. You may be right about Bucs waiting till off season but if the noise gets too loud and Winston woes continue, we will see some kind of move this season. GO BUCS

  34. I like this article if we’re 2-6. This seems to be a race between media outlets to claim “I told you so.”

  38. No offensive line, No running game, No QB, but a squad of two of the best receivers in the league, and eight questionable defensive backs in the last 4 years. There are not enough Draft Picks to fix all of the problems. The big problem is closer to the head of the organization.

  42. I think that too much blame is going to Winston. The Buccaneers should be 3-3 if Gay hit the short FG against the Giants. His QB rating is about average. The Buccaneers pass defense sucks. They could have the first five games, and Winston was good in them. He caused last week’s embarrassment. Simple recommendations:
    1. Ronald Jones main RB. 2. Dump Brad Perriman get 4th round compensation pick. 3 Trade. O.J Howard or Cameron Brate or Carl Nassib for possible draft picks 4. Look for Offense Line men dumps 5. Fire Litch 6. Try to get more cap space if they lose to the Titans

    • Agree. Not just for the record, but that Carolina game too. Mike Evans dropped a deep ball that hit him in the hands and would’ve been a sure TD. We couldn’t get the run game going against a worse-than-average NFL ranked run defense in Carolina. A second year play-caller that sometimes puts Winston in terrible passing situations. A QB Whisperer that tells Winston not to run…so opposing defenses don’t even need to worry about that. And a defense that allowed a 99 yard TD drive! PLENTY of blame to go around outside of Winston and a lot of the Captains of the team are either making big mistakes or just plain nonexistent in making plays.

Unfortunately this could be the evidence the Glazers need to make a hard reset on the whole franchise and not just a move away from Winston. But hopefully, they give them time. With the schedule getting better for the Bucs in the second half of the season, it’s just too early and careless to make a decision this early. Especially when it’s been well-covered that it took Carson Palmer about 8 games to get a firm handle on this offense.

  43. There are more teams than the Bucs and Titans considering moving on from their starting QB’s after the London fiasco. It’s certainly not some mind-boggling revelation. Our response should be a collective, “DUH”.

Jameis is quickly becoming a “coach-killer”. As they used to say about Steve DeBerg, whose play was also erratic, “Good enough to get you beat.” We all see the work ethic, we see the enthusiasm, we see the will to win and we see the fantastic plays that make us stand up and cheer. Buuuuuuuuuuuuut, there have been way too many times when Jameis’ play costs us the game and too few when it was the key to winning. I believe his teammates become more and more mentally fatigued with each turnover. (I know I do) I believe they then expect to lose………….again.

I sure hate to start over with yet another “savior”. I sure hope the London game was “rock bottom”. I’m willing to see what happens for the next 10 games. Maybe less, and give RG4 a few games if we have a repeat of Jameis’ generosity with the football.

Bruce Arians won’t be whispering in Jameis’ ear, he’ll be screaming. Me too. When’s the Draft?

  44. If we part ways with Winston no one will sign him to start. He’ll go the way of Blake Bortles. Some fans think we should franchise him. He’s not worth that kind of money, and what’s the point? If he doesn’t turn it around in the next 10 games what more do we need to see after 5 years. Gabbert could be our bridge QB if we draft a QB. There are a lot of good ones coming out this year, and if we have another 5-11 season would be foolish not to draft one no. After the first pick we could draft both lines of scrimmage. The money we’d save not paying Winston for below average play could go a long way to filling other needs.
