It’s fitting that March Madness begins soon, because the Bucs could have a buzzer beater on their hands.
According to ESPN’s Dianna Russini, the Bucs are still working on a long term deal with wide receiver Chris Godwin. Negotiations between the two sides could come down to the wire. Tampa Bay and Godwin have until 4 PM to negotiate before the franchise tag deadline hits on Tuesday.
If a deal is not done, Russini says that the franchise tag will likely be placed on Godwin for the second year in a row.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are currently working on a long term contract for receiver Chris Godwin. If a deal is not struck between the two sides by 4pm today, expect Tampa Bay to tag him for the second consecutive year, per sources.

Signing Godwin instead of franchise tagging him would be huge for the Bucs. That opens up the possibility to use the tag on their best cornerback, Carlton Davis III. Tampa Bay would be on the hook for $18.5 million if they franchise Godwin, which would be a severe blow to their cap space. This would also be the second year in a row that the Bucs used the tag on Godwin.
There’s been a lot of twists and turns in the saga of getting Godwin back on the team. There’s been reports that he’ll get the tag again, but Jeff Howe of the Athletic also said there’s optimism that a deal gets done.
One way or another, it looks like Godwin is a Buc next season. It’s just a matter of how expensive it will be. And how much space it will give the Bucs to re-sign other free agents.
Stay tuned Bucs, fans. This seems like it’s going down to the last couple of seconds on the clock.
