  1. The defense was bad last year. This year, the whole starting backfield is out due to injuries. That does not explain all of it, but it is part of it. Starting a full rookie backfield is a recipe for disaster. You can get rid of the coach (Mike Smith) but my question is, who takes his place at this point? What difference will it make?

Since Monte Kiffin left the Bucs defense has been on a downward path. It is now rock bottom. I would love to see someone recommend a viable option to replace Smith. Not some “pull someone from the defensive staff.” The problem I see is if you start learning new schemes now how is that going to work? The offense they maybe able to get back on track, but the defense the way it is playing – that maybe beyond what anyone can fix this season.

  2. I get your point Buc(s) Stop(s) here.

Yet how about considering that the defense was bad most of 2016 as well. Also, who says that a coach on a staff cannot be a valid in season option for a replacement.

Another option could be a football genius like Dick LaBeau. Not saying he is a top 10 defensive coordinator any more. But he is probably better than reigning number 32 defensive coordinator in this league, Mike Smith.

  3. Look, I am not saying a retread needs to be hired but Smith is currently the 32nd rated defensive coordinator. So another retread is Jack Del Rio and he already has coached with Koetter. He has got to be better.

  4. I thought MJ Stewart was a perplexing and kinda bad pick on draft night based purely on the players that were still available when we picked him. Namely Isiah Oliver and Donta Jackson. After watching his college tape I changed my mind slightly and knew he was an absolutely garbage pick.

Sure he plays with a lot of heart and physicality, and he lays some nice hits on people when he gets running down hill. But the dude is flat out plain and simple not good in coverage. You can not be a Corner in the NFL if you can’t cover. Hell you can’t even be that good of a safety anymore if you can’t cover.

Compound that with the fact that he’s an awful, awful fit for Mike Smiths scheme because he’s literally only not terrible when he can press and jam on the LOS. And we all know how much Smitty loves off coverage. Couldn’t wrap my mind around why Licht would pick a dude like Stewart knowing as much.

  5. And @Bucstopshere

Can’t blame it on injuries. You really can not. We gave up 40 points in Week 1 when the only people out were washed up Brent Grimes and Vernon for a little less than half the game. Apart from the 5 game streak in 2016 and a few games here and there, this defense has been terrible during Mike Smith’s time here. And for large chunks has been even worse than Lovies was.

Which is a statement I never actually thought I would have to make.

  6. It’s not personnel it’s Mike Smith. His scheme is retarded and he will not blitz. We blitz half as much as other teams on average. He didn’t blitz once in first half in Chicago And Trubisky has like 30 passer rating against blitz. They been complaining in Chicago about how all you have to do is blitz Trubisky and he can’t do anything. So what does smith do? No blitzes in first half period. He needs to be gone. Koetter is a stubborn jackass too. He will be fired for Smith.

  7. No DC is gonna come to a team in season and then probably get fired at the end of the year. There’s no way they could come in and install a new defensive scheme in two weeks. That’s just not gonna happen. I cant believe people are even suggesting a new DC from outside the organization. No one would take that job. It would probably be career suicide. It would have to be in house. I want Mike Smith gone but were pretty much stuck with him. at least were stuck with his system no matter what for this season. Should have been let go last year. Most likely our only hope is for things to just get a lot better after the bye week which seems impossible as of today. UGH!!!!!
    GO BUCS!!!
