Despite being just 2-3 after five games, Bruce Arians’ staff is thought highly of by some around the league. So highly in fact, they could possibly be coaching elsewhere in 2020.

At least Vegas thinks so anyway.

SportsBettingDime.com released a list of coaches and the odds of them being the next head coach of the Washington Redskins after Jay Gruden was fired on Monday morning. Tampa Bay offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich topped the group of potential candidates at 11/2.

Another Bucs name that has surfaced is defensive coordinator Todd Bowles. ESPN Insider Ed Werder tweeted it on Monday morning.

With 11 games to go and a lot of season left both of the mentioned Bucs assistants could still see their stock rise or fall depending on how the rest of the season goes. Tampa Bay’s defense is currently ranked 26th in the NFL, but is second in rushing defense and the Buccaneers offense sits 18th in the NFL averaging 360 yards pregame.

  1. Kind of a weird article to roll out after the Bucs got their @$$es handed to them the day before.

  2. Bowles has already made it clear that he has no interest in the Redskins job this last offseason. I’m not very concerned about staff losses this year as the history suggests they are a loyal bunch.

  3. So Bruce Allen comes in as the GM and makes a mediocre team bad and Gruden gets fired.
For Dany Snyder, I’m sure that makes sense.
Of course we have the same problem here with Licht and we already suffered through all of Allen’s horrendous picks.
Almost the entire 2016 draft was a bust now that Noah Spence is gone and VH III is headed out the door.
BTW, I used to be a Licht supporter but you can’t ignore the facts.
So what do the Glazers do, they give him an extended contract.
    Brilliant.
I heard a knowledgeable NFL commentator say that players don’t win Super Bowls, organizations do.
Although I don’t agree with that totally, there is a large amount of truth to the statement.
I don’t think the Glazers don’t want to win, they just don’t know how to.
I have always fought this position before, but am more agreeable to it now.
If BA can’t turn this ship around, the Glazers need to get out of the front office and hire a President of Football Operations and turn the reins over to him.
They can still go to the games on Sunday’s in their palatial boxes and have an office at One Buc Place for show, but after that they need to keep their hands off the team and let real football people handle it.
I wonder if Pete Carroll would be interested in the position.

  4. No chance Leftwich is a HC candidate – barely a OC.

I like Bowles and my hope has been he is the heir apparent to BA. Need to keep him in the fold.

  5. My god this is bizarre alternate universe stuff Leftwhitch hasn’t been an offense of coordinators long enough to know anything about him.
Bowles fresh off of being fired from the Jets as of five games only three teams have had more points scored on them than bucs 28 teams have done better at defense than the Bucs Stupidest thing I’ve ever read.

  6. Can someone please tell me why Leftwhich is such a hot pick for a HC job? He’s barely called plays in the NFL and so far he’s been just okay doing that. What’s the hoopla all about?

Then Bowles……. some coaches are way better assistants the Head Coaches and I think holds true for Bowles.

I really hope this doesn’t boil down to a “Race” issue with hiring HC’s why can it just ever be the best person for the job. I don’t care what color, religion or sexual preference you have. If your the most qualified then you get the job. I wish interviews could be totally blind, then who ever blew away the competition in the interview gets hired. So Sick of this crap.

    • The best person can’t get the job if you don’t make the job open to all available candidates to apply. Owners and front office execs were often making up their mind of who to hire before they even fired the person currently in the position. Candidates of color were not being considered for positions because positions were never made open to them in the first place so they could apply. The people the owners and front office execs wanted to hire were often people they knew or recommended by people they trust. The best person for the job and person they feel most comfortable with are rarely the same person.

As for Leftwich and Bowles I am not impressed with either of them so far and being ranked 18th and 26th respectively is strike 2. I wouldn’t lose any sleep if another team pilfered Leftwich or Bowles at this point.

      • I understand that they pretty know who they are going to hire before any interviews. But that doesnt mean a Person of color wouldn’t be their selection, thats not fair to say either. I just don’t care for how everything is made to be about race, gender, religion, any of that. I think overall we have just lost the “Best person” for the job.

I agree totally about Leftwhich with you, However Bowles has made a big difference from what Mike Smith brought to the table. It’s pretty tough to run the Defense you want when you don’t have the personnel IE: Defensive Backs. As much man coverage Bowles like to run this group of D-Backs just can’t get it done.

Green Bay & Cincinnati I think both had horrible hires for head coaches as well as Arizona. I didn’t get those hirings at all.

  7. I think it would be wise for both to stay with BA in Tampa, for the time being. You don’t want to be HC on the Redskins. Snyder has been through 7 or 8 coaches in his 20 years as owner.

Smarter to stay in Tampa, until a better job than the Redskins opens.

  8. No candidate worth a lick of salt would ever, EVER, take the Redskins job. Dan Snyder is the absolute worst owner in all of sports. He will end up hiring some once-was, has been, or some college coach hungry for some money but willing to sell himself out. Look for Dabo Sweeney to seek a pay day under the auspices of “getting total control”…only to find out that Dan doesn’t give up control (Shanahan learned that one the hard way).

  10. Bowles maybe, but he has already shown he isn’t really HC material. I honestly don’t see any reason anyone would want Leftwhich at this point.

  11. Good or bad, I’m not ready to judge Bowles or Leftwich after a mere 5 games with a bunch of youngsters still getting acclimated to the systems. I do know that just like a good carpenter doesn’t necessarily make a good foreman. Countless assistants and coordinators are better suited to remain position coaches and I’m sure there are others who might struggle to coach young players while excelling as the head coach. The difficult task for team owners is to recognize the necessary traits.

  12. Let’s pull the reins in a bit. No one is coming for any Buc assistants, at least not now. Bucs might have won their last game at LA, but they might win nine in a row. We don’t know yet. That’s the Bucs, world beaters one week, red headed step children the next. We’ll know after all 16 are played.

  13. Uhh, the Bucs defense ranks dead last in the only important category – points allowed. And if you want to hang your hat on yards allowed, the Bucs also are dead last in passing defense .. and as everybody knows, the NFL is a passing league, so being worst in the league at the two most important things – points allowed and passing yards allowed – is hardly “HC material”.

But on the other hand, Snyder is a dumbshit who has ruined the Washington football franchise ever since he bought the team. Leave it to him to make Bowles, already fired once as a Head Coach and responsible for the worst defense in the entire league this season, his head coach.

  14. The only “line” Bowles should be in is the unemployment line. dude sucks.

he goes all in on stopping the run/blitz and teams just throw on our inexperienced secondary.

Bowles: “Hey, we dare you to beat our rookie and shit DB’s”
Every Team we Face: “Hold my beer!”

  15. Umm Bowles sucks? Really? He would have job tomorrow if Bucs sent him packing today. It’s the personnel specifically CB’s. Give it some time. They affect everything he does! You can’t be aggressive like you want and they can’t cover anyone!

It’s never as bad as you think after a loss or as good as you think after a win. We are an 8-8 team five or take this year all things considered. We are not a playoff team YET and sure as hell not a super bowl team. Did anyone think they were? They compete and haven’t been blown out like in past games. Losses were close. Giants game was just regarded really.

The Saints game sucked. We got bitch slapped by a super bowl team on the road. We had several horrendous calls that didn’t help. Lost whole right side of O line and best cover corner to ejection that was horse shit too.

I think Bucs bounce back against Panthers just hope Wells and Watford aren’t big down grades.

As far as the head coaching talk? Really stupid and early to talk about that imo!

    Go Bucs!
