On Wednesday, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers introduced their new defensive line coach Brentson Buckner.

Buckner was genuine even before he answered his first question. He walked into the room, walked to the podium, smiled and even gave a little laugh. When he was asked what the smile was for, he said, “I’m excited. This is like Christmas for me.”

In the full video below, courtesy of the Buccaneers twitter account, Buckner talks about the new defense he’ll bring, how he approaches being a coach, the goals for this season, some stories from his old playing days and how he intends bring a championship caliber defensive line back to the city of Tampa Bay – one he said he admired year ago.

Watch as much as you can. Buckner’s passion was a treat to see.

For more on Buckner’s background, as well as the kind of defense he’ll be bringing to Tampa Bay, check out this week’s Cover 3.

Here are the quotes I singled out on D-Line aggressiveness. “We know when the Bucs step on the field, it’s going to be a battle. We might not win them all, but your training room is going to look like we did.” “We’re going to hunt until the whistle. We don’t want nobody to feel comfortable. … We want to be vicious. We want our play to precede us when we walk into a stadium.” “I want my defensive line to be “physically and mentally tough.” “You’re going to see four guys recklessly attacking the guy in front of them… Read more »

Was impressed with the hire… even more so now. I have felt the defense especially was lacking attitude. Buckner seems to demand it. GMC, we are about to see how good you can be. Buckner kind of called him out in this saying GMC should want to leave the defense, better than when he got here. Challenge issued.

I LOVE IT !! Really like Buckner even more now!! Macabee, I totally agree with your list of quotes. It is only one press conference, but this seems like a huge step in the right direction. Hopefully, he will rub off on Mike Smith also. Can’t quote it, but I also loved when he was talking about coaching 7-9 year olds. Said something like, the kid did not want to play and came kicking and screaming to practice. Then, a week or 2 later, you couldn’t get the kid to go home from practice because of all the fun he… Read more »

I like it! HE’s real! No sugar coating it. I heard no Coach speak. He was complementary to others in our Division. But, he also was real in the fact of what it takes and what he expects and you even saw the player side come out a little when he was talking about rubbing with Sapp in the fish wrap! Not every player will hit it off with their coach! Not every player will feel like they are being utilized to the best of their ability. That’s an ego thing sometimes especially on the backside of their career!…. I… Read more »

Not to put a damper on things because I love the hire and love what he had to say, but when did hiring a position coach warrant a press conference?

Outside of McCoy, and he has his critics, our D line lacks any quality starters let a lone depth. I like what I here from Buckner, but will that result in more wins? Not with the current talent Buckner has to work with. We just let Baker our starting nose tackle free agent bust go. Licht has the task of getting better players up front. Will he start with one big piece Vita Vea? It’s time to build up the D line.

Definitely like his attitude and passion and believe the DL corp is gonna be run a bit differently this year. Love the story of them coming down to watch our playoff game and their determination to build their own legendary DL. Think that’ll resonate in the DL room and, if Licht can add some key pieces, maybe McCoy and Co. can create a DL that creates the kind of buzz Buckner alluded to at that playoff game.

It just does not feel right. This guy is talking like our DC. While Smitty sits in the pressbox with his binoculars all game? I Guess Mike Smith has lost his edge to enforce discipline and bring that edge to our defense. He hired this guy to do his job..instead.
Kinda smells funny…………

Based on press conference he did feel like a DC. If he does half of what he says he will either be the Buc’s DC or heading up a defense on another team sooner rather than later. That being said I walked away feeling much better about our chances for overall Defense improvement. Of course we all thought Hayes would be the answer. Hope Buckner gets some input into free agency and Draft.

After watching Buckner’s press conference, watching his 1-on-1 with Casey Phillips, reading macabees’ and so CAL BUC FAN’s and everyone else’s comments here, I am psyched all over again! I will never go to a training camp and do all of that work so I can get as excited as I want to as a fan.

P.S. I love the fact that Buc fans are generally knowledgeable and appreciative of defensive football. I love that the Buccaneers’ are still being compared to older NFL teams such as the Bears and the Steelers after all this time.

More than ever I hope and pray for the ascendency our defense this year.

I’m betting the sand in my sneakers that If available at 7 Vita Vae is wearing Pewter and Red, and unless Buckner is a complete bust, he’ll be the DC within a season or two.

I say we trade back get Derwin James and daron Payne no top 10 talent besides Barkley or Chubb

Lets not forget who’s really coaching this team, Dirk Koetter. If Buckner wants to instill toughness to a soft unit he won’t be able to do it through hard work, and tough practices. Dirk Koetter runs a don’t knock anyone down, save yourself for opening day kind of camp. Temper your enthusiasm, Dirk Koetter still runs the show.

Did anyone else find it odd that Buckner said he still had to get together with Smith and Koetter and see what their vision for their defense will be, as well as being unsure whether they’ll require input from him on player evaluation, etc? ? Would think that’s something that would’ve been covered during the interview, though I’ve never applied for a DL coach position before myself.

Seems kind of odd definitely. But every team is different I suppose. Plus we could be moving towards more 3-4, so just to temper how much and what not?? -shrugs-

Well, they could had been interested and interviewed him within his coaching style, experiences, player eval background and overall defense knowledge.

The part regarding a say in the draft process or players on the roster. Is more of an organizational meeting. Who gets to add their comments into the equation.

If you start telling your bosses what you want power wise at an interview then you may not get asked back or get the job. You don’t want to rock the boat till you get the job~

Now I’m seeing reports that Suh is expected to be cut post June 1st. The excuse people are already making that pass rushers won’t be available this year is a farce. Sheldon Richardson isn’t expected to be tagged, Suh potentially released, same for Michael Bennett, Ealy is also on the market. The production will be there, let’s see if maybe the 5th time is the charm and Jason gets this summer right. Putting Suh next to GMC would be an absolute nightmare for other teams. Couple that with Michael Bennett and Talib and we might have ourselves a defense after… Read more »
